best hoods for my new 4x8 hydrohut silver?

Ticalion, it depends on your intent. A hood... MOST hoods, rather, are superior for light spread. A cool tube is superior for cooling purposes.

I'm getting some tubes this time around because I'm typically a vert grower, but that won't be possible this time around. I can't see throwing money on hoods away when I'll likely never use them again. Tubes... I'll use 'em upright after this grow.

Yah hang some vertical bulbs and get a lot higher yield and screw the reflector....I invite you to look into the vertical growing thread...you might find it very enlightening.

Grown on bro...

A "jenky hood"? Spoken by someone on the sidelines that loves reading reviews, but doesn't own jack shit.

I own a few magnum xxxl "The Ochos" and these hoods are the shit and worth every penny.

Umm, actually I own a 4k setup, 2k is in a 4x8 tent. I was just at the local grow shop and could see through the corners and the glass wasn't solidly in place. I wouldnt buy anything with that much leaks. I however am going to go buy a block buster today to replace my last Super Sun. Please keep your ultra negative comments to yourself. I never said anything bad about magnum's ability to minimize hot spots, but as with most sun system hoods they just seem like they are poor quality.

I am sorry you are so defensive about your poor quality hoods. How much effort did you put into making them air tight?

Blockbuster hoods and the XXXL Magnums are made by the same exact manufacturer in the same exact manufacturing facility. I own both, and they are nearly identical in function, and completely identical in build quality.

Way to prove that you don't know shit about something you looked at in a shop. You are "gonna buy" this and that, but you don't own shit. Contradict yourself some more, it's pretty funny.

Okay let me put this out there -

Every. Single. Hood. Is going to have leaks. That's what silicon is for. That point aside - the PURPOSE of a hood is not to get which hood has the least leaks. But to get the hood which bests distributes the light evenly over your chosen grow area.

You can build a PERFECT hood in the sense you can build a leak proof, solid well-constructed hood, and it won't be worth crap unless it reflects light the way you need it to. You can get a leaky-ass cheap flimsy hood that reflects light WAY better than your well-made sturdy hood and with a touch of silicone to seal up the leaks, will perform far better than your "perfect" hood.

The Magnum XXXL is great for larger grow areas. It is superior to the SS2 in a 4x4 area, but only slightly. In a 3x3 the SS2 reigns. I'd choose the SS2 personally because it's smaller, lighter, and thus easier to set-up, transport, move, etc.

I'd also like to point out this is all only if you insist on only the best. You don't always get what you pay for when it comes to reflectors.

You can get a cheaper reflector, like the Yieldmaster linked above and it will perform just fine.

I just got a blockbuster and love it, lot better than the yieldmaster. and bigger, The yieldmaster only throws light to the sides

its big but not huge like the magnum thats why I like it.

I had to tape up my yieldmaster, the block buster seals perfect no tape

xxxl magnum or the raptor, check out greners for good prices, the magnum is about 200 us,in the uk it cots 200 so thats double!!

I will have pics of my new grow up very soon. You can also look at my profile and see some of the stuff i have owned. Now when we go to your profile you can't see shit. Why is that? Because you are a liar and a fatmouth and have no idea what you are talking about. Sorry son, I am done here. Judging by all your posts it seems like you just come on here to start shit and have no clue whats going on and offer no sort help or positive advice to anybody. Btw, I am going to go out on a limb here and assume you actually don't own shit. Go back to facebook little one!

The fact is not everyone on ICmag is from a medical state and can't just walk to their grow shop. The fact that I can and see the products working and I can physically touch them allows me to offer a little incite to the people who can only see the products online.

@smokingErb: I had a Valuline air cooled hood and that fucker was air tight! It was a pretty good and inexpensive hood. But you are right. There arent any lights that are truly air tight. However, when I purchase my hoods I want them to be pretty damn close. The Magnums weren't.

2 blockbusters would be perfect!!!

After doing quite a bit of reading and research (and chatting with Spurr), I went with 2 - 8"blockbusters with 1000K Digilux HPS bulbs for my 8x4 flowering tent. If you aren't going above 400W, the Philips CMH bulb is excellent for all stages of plant growth. Hope that helps!

I originally bought 2 ss2 hoods after reading pico's thread...then I got 2x 8" magnum xxxl's ..

I prefer the magnums in a 4x4 setting.

I would go back to the ss2's in a 3x4 canopy though.

In your case though I would go vertical with 2x 600w stacked on a mover with 2 or 3 tiers of shelves.

edit: with blumats in coco and smartpots ;)

About a month ago I was in pretty much the same spot as you are. I needed something for my new dr240w, after a lot of reading I went with 2 6" Block Busters. I haven't got to run anything under them yet but the light coverage seems spot on.
