Coco hydro

Hi guys, I have used coco before briefly in a previous grow and was impressed by it. I used it like soil except watering it more, and I was amazed at the massive root development vs soil. Well, due to circumstances I had to temporarily go back to soil, but I want to give coco another try.

I have also been experimenting with my first hydro setup (a single plant in 1 gallon bubble bucket) and am liking it so far. I'm wondering if I can somehow combine the two ideas, using coco as medium in a bubble bucket filled with nute solution w/ air pump and all? Would it be best to use the coco just inside the basket, with nute solution only in the bucket, or fill the entire bucket with coco and flood it? I guess the first setup would be an improvement over using perlite in the basket, but would there be any advantages to the second idea over a straight hydro setup?

Thanks!

Coco hydro

The best way is to treat coco like soil as far as watering goes. Water till about 10% runoff and drain to waste.

I've heard of some successful ebb&flow stories with coco instead of hydroton but it's not easy and I guarantee there will be nutrient lockout issues unless you have fine tuned buffering issue with coco.

I believe your speaking of DWC in a bucket with airstone. I'm not sure what you're asking but I would not put coco in there! The whole point is oxygen enriched water.

I love coco but am considering straight hydro just for the cleanliness aspect and less work to maintain. Just gotta check pH and TDS/EC and you're golden.

you can use coco in smart pots on an ebb and flow but you would end up with a soup of coco if you tried to use it with bubble buckets...

so to answer your question yes and no...
