What's new

is vertical lighting better?

i've looked at many grows now and i see most of the bigger grows use vertical lighting instead of horizontal.

i'm setting up a new grow area this week. my light is a 400w mh/hps cooltube. i've got 6 plants that are on their 6th week of flowering along with 9 clones and 1 seed. for now the 400w light will be used for flowering while i use cfl's for veg. i'm wondering if i should hang my cooltube vertically during flowering. if so, is there a certain layout i should use for the plants? a certain distance? i really wanna get the most out of my light and my grow. can someone shed some light (hehe) on hanging the light vertically?

its not all its cracked up to be IMO. I did it for 2 runs and it didnt prove worth it to me...Honestly i havent even seen any real compelling evidence which matches the claims...

i can promise you vert will destroy horizontal everytime... dialed or not... heath can hit near 3 gpw, selfhemp hit 1.3 first run. im looking to do 1 or better so i wonder too why more dont do it... saves money on startup too cause ya can ditch the 150-300 reflector, those add up quick...

edit: i couldnt put my 23 plants on the floor at the same time... hmmm that means i have more square footage of foliage which means more yeild..

along with a bigger light footprint. it also requires a longer veg unless stacking bulbs or plants. i think using one bulb aint worth it and dont really yield more than horizontal sog. but stacked bulbs or plants does yield more

6 plants would work excellent around a 400w in a vert grow.

I would use 30" for the diameter around the bulb, so about 14" from bulb to buds because the light is 2" diameter. I am using a 400w on bottom with a 600w stacked on top. Even if I didn't have the 600, I would use the same diameter as the 400 lights them up really well too.

Here is a pic of 6 plants with a 30" inside diameter:

vertical is amazing...I helped a patient set up his grow recently and we did 2x 400w in a 4x4 closet and he pulled close to 2 lbs in hydro(lucas) on his first grow (with a little of my help ;) ) He grew a strain I've been growing for over a year and he ended up with buds bigger then I've ever grown under my 1k lights! ...god I wish I had pics..multiple colas as big as my arm! I was convinced before hand, but now I'm obsessed and all my shit is getting converted......colas as big as my arm I tell ya!!! off 2x 400w hps with cheapo bulbs and fucked up temps!?

If you're still not convinced just go read selfhemployed's thread in the vert section...I think he pulled like 5.5lbs off 2k on his first run and could have fit in 40% more plants but was limited by numbers.

your not making a valid comparison...

if everything is equal, plant numbers, environment, veg time there is no doubt you'll yield more...

plus you can grow any style with vert ie. sog, scrog, trees, whatever...

show me someone who pulls 2 pound or better plants indoor with horitonzal lighting... ya cant... i can find many under vert.

show me any traditional no co2 horizontal garden that even comes close to 2.5 gpw i can show you more than one vert that has...

how many people's first ever indoor grow hits over 1 gpw... not many unless you look at the vert forum...

I cant say vert is better, just different.Last run with a 400,I had one plant with about4 zipps dry.Thats not great or anything but there were like 15 other plants around the bulb and all my jars were filled.

about 30 days in this time around

one thing to consider in this discussion is the dimensions of the actual grow space.. if someone has say a 4x2 tent with a 400/600 watt, it would seem quite difficult to utilize that space for a vertical grow.

Now if we move to a 3x3 tent.. this may be even too small for a vertical 400 watt grow, however, out of that space, a 600 watt horizontal could yield more than tryin to squeeze a 400 vertical in there.

I have a similar situation in my flowering closet which is 5x4 x 6 feet tall. I could probably run 1 600 in that space vertically (not enough vertical height to stack) but a 1000 watter might be too cramped. So I'm left with a choice between a 600 watt vertical or 1000 watt horizontal. I opt to use a 1000 watt horizontal because its easier to yield more in this space this way. Obviously, if i were to able to turn my 1000 watt vertical, it could yield much more, but it seems that 5x5 is the minimum to run 1000 watt vertical.

I've also seen grows on here with a 6x6 area dedicated to a 400/600/800 watt vertical bulb. These grows can do great in grams/watt measure. However, if one were to use that space with 4 horizontal 400 watters, the yield per space would proably be higher even though the gram/watt went down.

so, on a related note, all my vert homies...

If you were limited to a two bulb system and you could build the room to suit you, would you get better results from two bulbs hung horizontally or vertically (in relation to each other)?

scrog it... make a circle of chicken wire 3.5 feet in diameter put the thousand in the middle... with proper training you can make it happen.

edit ^^^ directed at zor.

@ Anti id say stacking the bulbs in a colosseum style would be ideal...

I can't believe how much money I've wasted on reflectors over the years...

ive considered this seriously. The only thing im having a problem getting figured out is how i would access the plants in the back. They would essentially have ~6 inches of space from the screen to the wall...

I've always wanted to try vert. Seems to make a lot more sense. It seems possible to do a 600 in a 4X4 Tent. I wonder if two would be possible?

I'm doing a 600 vert in a 4x4 tent now, so yea it's doable. Next run I'm adding a 400MH to it. Vert FTW!
