hey guys, I just acquired this beauty. Im going to air cool 2x 1000w lights in here. I cant decide if I wanna go with one of the glass tube style reflectors, but the nicer reflector-like ones...like the melon head, or the cool star plus.

...

OR, should I go with something like 2 block busters? I was planning on using an 8 inch vortex to cool the lights. the melon head only comes in 8 inch. does the cool star plus come in 8? the blockbusters are 6 inch I think...id rather not have to use reducers and all that. I need effectiveness.

this is my first tent, Im pretty excited but Ill need some help. any good info on lighting and cooling this puppy would be greatly appreciated.

thanks guys!!

Also guys i have another question. I have an almost new can 125 filter w a 10 inch max fan. Is this gonna be way overkill? I dont want this bad boy to goto waste, but it might be way too much for the tent?

Pico made a great thread testing hoods.

Long story short, the super sun 2 threw up the most consistent numbers. I think it only comes with a 6" flange though.

The Magnum XXXL did beat out the super sun SLIGHTLY over a larger area, however you can get 2 SS2's for the price of one Magnum XXXL.

Even after the test Pico still opted for his SS2's. After reading the thread, the SS2 is the only reflector I'd use.

Let me see if i can find the thread for you.

There ya go. His tests were done over a 3x3' area, and eventually moved up to 4x4.

As for your cooling issues - a 6" fan should be plenty to cool both lights so long as you're not pulling the air from one hood into another. Connect both hoods with a Y-splitter to the fan each with their own intake and a 6" would work just fine.

As for the "overkill" fan... speed controllers work wonders :D You really only need about 650 CFM for that tent.

I'm with Fisted on that. Vert is definitely the way to go, and you have the space to do it. Cant believe I didn't consider that.

Check out the vertical forum, there's lots of vert grows in tents.

But are you planning a SOG or something? If that's the case just run 4-6 levels covering about 4-5 feet in vertical height depending on the size of the finished plants.

I can't say enough good things about the SS2 though if you want to go with hoods. I'm typically a vert grower and I'm opting for a horizontal grow this time around, I'm opting for cool tubes over AC hoods because of the small space I'm growing in, just can't fit the SS2's in there realistically.

not really plannin for much of a SOG, just going to do potted plants, probly 8-12 bushes in 5-7 gal smart pots w a good soil.

You can easily grow bushes in vert. give 'em some space between each other and set them around the light. It'll require some training, it's pretty much like LST but sideways? You know how you prune off all the small tiny undergrowth? You do the same thing in vert, only its the side thats facing the tent that needs pruned. Then you just train the bud sites so that they're exposed to the light - they'll grow that way naturally anyway.

When I grew bushes vertically, I topped 'em early and had 2 main leads that I bent down into a severe Y shape. The main leads then branched out towards the light, those were topped as well and just kept tying them down.

Or get you some reflectors, just whatever suits you the best.

Vert sounds awesome i can totally picture what u mean but for now i gotta go w reflectors. I just really cant decide what ones. Its a severe toss up between maybe cool star plus, silver star, block buster, or super sun 2. I cant decide. Blockbusters would be cool but they are pricey now. The cool star plus is nice, i really like the inner tube style, i feel like it would air cool like a champ, i just dont know if theyll spread the light as well as a blockbuster. The ss2 is sweet, but alittle narrow.

What do yall think??

whodair made me do it vert after seeing his results - these plants are in a 4x4 with just a 400W

Fuck it I say go with magnums! Loyal super sun2 user here, they just dont spread the light as well as a magnum.

I only crop the top third of the plant, it has the most prime nugs, Unless you got trees going in that tent go with the magnum, blockbuster, raptor, or radiant 8.

Acutally not sure if 2 raptors could fit.

The Magnum XXXL is a jenky hood. Those things seem like they will fall apart. I love most sun systems ability to throw light evenly, but they are very poor quality IMO.

After looking at the video of magnum vs raptor on youtube greners it seems that the raptor is built sturdier, but have been told they weigh alot. Always been a loyal sun systems guy but after buying lots of the super sun 2's i noticed i had to return a couple because the quality was not up to par, just dissapointed always thought they had a superior product but know i am starting to question there quality control.

I have owned the super sun2, cool sun, cool sun xl, cool tube, radiant 8, Daystar ac, and super sun1.

Fisted beat me and a few others to it...No hood! get a good vent fan and reap the rewards of intense lumens being blasted 360deg. in your tent, you will never look back.NS

A "jenky hood"? Spoken by someone on the sidelines that loves reading reviews, but doesn't own jack shit.

I own a few magnum xxxl "The Ochos" and these hoods are the shit and worth every penny.

no one seems to like the tube style with reflector? like the cool star plus or the melon head?? to me they seem great for air cooling.

the magnums and blockbusters are sweet, just pricey and I figured the thru and thru tube style would cool the easiest?

I work at a hydro shop so maybe I could get my boss to cut me a deal on the hoods. I got 1 hell of a deal on the tent, Ill tell u that much! ;)

SDG - whats up bro?!! thanks for stoppin in! :D
