Get Baked and Go Fishing

I used to go deep sea with my dad in Baja mexico. Went every summer for 5-6 years Really good times. No dank though. One day we would go for marlins and just troll for hours and catch a Blue, or some sail fish. Then other days we would hit the tuna schools and pull 8-10 30-50 pounder tunas and make sashimi on the boat. We would also go out for Dorado, catch and catch a few bonita on accident. We always threw that bonita crap and the marlins back of course. The tuna was for eatin. Haven't been fishing in such a long time -.- Maybe I'll hit up that trout farm near the gold course. Or hit up a party boat in SD this summer. If your going to go to Mex stay out of Cabo, to long of boat rides, captains will take your money and you'll get skunked. Go East Cape.

Any ice fishing in here?
I live in a northern climate where it is a long standing practice.
Nothing like going out with a buddy and clam baking my shanty with a couple brews. As I get older, I don't find myself going as frequently as years past. It gets pretty tough on the body.

In the summer when I am feeling energized I enjoy hopping in my kayak and slowly making my way to a few secret honey holes to burn a few bowls and catch a few bass. I feel at peace out on the water.

West coast steelheader here. Pretty much all the fly guys I run into on the river are tokin, nowadays instead of showing them a fly you just pass them a bowl :)

Can't catch a damn thing while smoking. My concentration goes way off, so I leave the bud behind, & save it for the camp fire instead.

Hawaiian Slide Bait Fishing

Hawaiian Slide Bait Fishing

Shorecasting is the way to go. But you gotta hustle.

The day starts at dawn. You could buy frozen bait but why? You hop in the water and dive for your bait. You are looking for Taco...Japaneese word for octipus. Once you have enough to cover your hooks....Time to haul ass. You're not the only guy with this in mind..

Today we are heading to the backside of Maui. We get to S. Wailua. Look down...nobody there. Great.

Now comes the fun part. All your gear, ice, bait, food...everything has to go down a 150 ft cliff with a few ropes and a ladder. You slip...you die. Simple.

Now you have the spot, you have the cave, so get to work.

We start with 13 ft poles. I use lemmiglass poles because they are easy to cast. On the pole goes a 4/0 Penn reel with 50 lb test. Tied to the end of the line is a barrel swivel, then a length of steel leader, and then a stopper. Tied to that with a breakaway line is an eight to twelve OZ grabber lead.

Can you cast? You better be able too, because all that equiptment has to be put 150 yrds out to the deep blue sea.

By now you have been cracking your ass since dawn. Poles are in the water. Sun is setting. Time to slide. Baited hook, tied with a short leader, to a slide bait swivel (almost looks like a pigtail). You twist it on your line and let it go. This way you can slide a few times without pulling your pole up to change bait.

You have bait in the water, night has fallen...Party time. Put a cowbell on your pole and forget about it. Cook dinner, Smoke joints..Relax.

A few hours later, just befoe you start to sleep, a cowbell rings...followed by a ratchet screaming. Hana pa'a.

It's Bobby's pole. Everybody stumbles out to help. Bobby is the boss though. The object is to fight the fish around the other lines without getting tangled.

About 20 minutes later, you put your light in the water and see pink eyes. Shit. Sharky. Tax collector, man in the grey suit. we have many names for them.

About a seven foot tiger shark. And Bobby wants to get it out of the water, If we don't we will be catching sharks all night long.
Now we need an idiot to gaff that puppy.

That would be me. Sharks barrel roll, and hauling a hundred lb barrel rolling shark up 20 ft is not fun. It's great fun to watch someone else do it though.

Anyway shortly after that we caught a mu'u (manteeth) and an uku (grey snapper). Not what we were looking for, but some of the best eating fish you can find.

The Mu'u you will seldom find in the market, because that one goes directly to our dinner table.

It's early in the season....but we try to go fishing at least once a month. More trips will follow. Maybe this year I can show you all what a hundred lb ulua looks like....and myself too.

Now I can't upload my pics....I will do that when it lets me.

Gearing up for some low key back country fishing in the angeles national forest. The waters/creeks/rivers have been closed for quite some years but there is some deep deep pools and such so I assume it holds nice natives.

Any advice for spin fishing unknown creeks and rivers? Such as techniques, etc.
