Anybody ordered light controllers from this guy (dxsoundo.com)

I just built this unit for a friend. IMHO it's best to purchase a lighting controller that exceeds any CSA/UL/ETL/CEC/NEC requirments. The RANCO has two stages, stage one temp shuts off one light at a time till temp lowers to preset, then rotates to the next light to turn off when temp rises. Stage two temp kills all lights in 60 seconds.

nice can it looks well thought out do you have any visual trip indicator for the over temp protection?

I wouldn't say their great products, they look rather cheaply built to me. When you remove the cover plate and screw the loadcenter to a wall, looks like you'll have to remove the receptacle covers and screw the gangboxes to the wall. I would't trust that digital timer that DXHydro uses, looks like it's from wallmart. I'm sure his units work, but they would never pass inspection.

In my opinion, you get what you pay for. Those DXHydro units are cheaply built so cheap to buy. Guaranteed the gangboxes will come lose, SquareD is the cheapest breaker/loadcenter you can buy, not much better than FP. The timer looks really cheap, it looks like it runs on a AAA battery. I am curious as to why he only supplies one ammeter on a panel that has 240V and 120V loads, like Powerbox, I'd like to see current load on both hots. What brand of contactors does DX use. When it comes to electrical, being cheap can cause problems.
Why all the hate on Square d? I can understand the hate for FP and stab lok panels but Square d panels while run of the mill they don't seem inferior Im just curious maybe you could school me on this

they are 1/3 the price of Powerboxes and all the componets can be swapped or replaced from Home Depot...and its made in America.....

I'd rather pay a few hundred bucks for a custom made product of quality then a $1,000 on a powerbox made in China

I've seen a lot of SquareD panels with melted buses, faulty breakers with about a 20% failure rate, plus I have my own preference to use Siemens. Are you sure Powerbox is made in China?

removed the coverplate and mounted without having to remove anything....everything looks solid. the timer has been working for me with no problem now.....its a pretty heavy solid timer box....

What commercial units would pass inspection?
Unlike DX's units, every commercial unit I've seen that uses both 240 and 120 volts does so *without a neutral wire*. Would that pass inspection?

The High-Lite units have ETL C/US listed stickers on them and only come in 120V. As far as I know they will pass in Canada.

Also if you are in Canada you can get a one time CSA approval done on your electrical components. I know two people that did this.

Yeah I'm not sure what hes talking about. As soon as I received my 12kw controller I checked all the connections and made sure everything was wired correctly, the connections are all well secured. So far its been running for 5 months without any problems. Well built controller if you ask me.

Any updates? Is everyone's controller working? I'm thinking about ordering one of his units.

The reason those units are so cheap from him is that he uses the cheapest no-name components, timer, relays, contactors, etc. You should contact an electrician and have him build you one.

He said he used Square D, Omron, Pioneer, Seimens stuff throughout. He actually told me the specific brand he used for each item, but I don't remember well enough to relay it. The timer is a Coleman Cable.

I don't know anything about the brands used, so not real sure what quality level those items are at.

If I could get a schematic or diagram I could build one myself. The price, while important, isn't the biggest issue. I just can't seem to find a well-made controller.

I don't know of any electricians to ask, nor what I would ask for exactly. What do you think a similar product would cost if I had an electrician build me one?

Can you recommend a product you feel is well-made?

Yeah when I was on the phone with him he was very straightforward about everything. He literally went step by step through the construction process of one of his units, detailing exactly which item was which brand, how he connected it etc. Unfortunately our phone signal was terrible so I don't have all the information.

Do you have one of his controllers Hammerhead?

I just want something that is reliable, won't burn my house down and preferably doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I like that his power thief disallows use of the dryer while my lights are on. That's convenient.

Also he won't make a controller with 120v outlets unless the 240v line coming in is a 4-prong because he says it is very unsafe. Just something to keep in mind if anyone looks over his stuff.

Very nice guy will help you if he can

Yes I have the power thief. I ordered mine a long time ago. I did mention him then but nobody had herd of him yet. I do not have it installed yet. I got the cords long enogh so I dont have to install the unit by the dryer. It will be installed in the flower room itself and long runs of power cord(15') to and from the dryer outlet. The unit plugs into the dryer outlet. The dryer plugs into the unit.

Since it isn't installed, do you think you'd be willing to take some pictures of it, especially the inside?

:thank you:
