What's new

fert question....

assume you've got two plants of equal age, size, etc.

one is routbound in a small pot and one is freshly up-potted.....should one get stronger or more nutes than the other?

common sense tells me the rootbound plant would use up the smaller amount of nutes quicker since the dirt to root ratio is lower...however i also feel like the increased growth of up-potting could call for more nutes...whats the score here? whats really going on? who gets more? or less? or is it the same?

I vote the same.
The one in the smaller container is just going to drink faster and need more frequent waterings. I could see nute buildup in the smaller container as a possibility, so a light flush might be needed along the way. You will need to watch runoff.

There's nothing common about that sense. Rootbound plants can be very sensitive to shock, hitting it with stronger nutes may cause issues. Fix your rootbound plant first, debate nutes later.

due to lighting/space constraints i cannot up pot right now. poor planning also plays a role in there......thanks for the warning about shock issues!
