Lady Gaga: "I Smoke a Lot of Pot"

at least christina sings live. no poker face lip sync

Not that I'm a Gaga Groupie, but every performance I've ever seen of her she's actually singing.

And she can REALLY play the piano...

and before she had her own record deal, she wrote songs for people like Britney Spears and Pussycat Dolls.

So... I'd consider her more of a "real" artist than Britney Spears or Christina Aguilara. When you hear that Britney wrote one of her songs, she means that she wrote some of the lyrics to that song, with help from her producers.

When you hear that Gaga wrote a song, it means she wrote or collaborated on the music AND wrote the lyrics.

(Not that I own or would buy any of the music she's put out thus far.)

People who are saying she has no talent should come out with a definition of talent.

Because, though I don't think she's very pretty (what's that got to do with talent? nothing) and I don't particularly care for most of her songs and I don't own any of her albums....

as an ARTIST, I respect what she's done.

The fact that she's NOT very pretty and still successful as a female artist? Name one other female recording artist that's been in the charts in the last 10 years that wasn't at least an 8.

Gaga without makeup is a 4 or 5 at best. And yet she is doing the best she can with what she naturally has... and in some of her videos (bad romance, poker face) manages to come off looking like a sex symbol. That's impressive to me.

But throw all that stuff away, she can actually play piano very well. She can actually sing without autotune. She actually sings WHILE doing choreography. Britney doesn't. Christina doesn't. (You can tell when Christina is actually singing in her performances because she stands still or sits down for that part of the show. When she's dancing around, lip synch.)

Please define talent if you wanna say she has none. By all reasonable standards, she has it.

I wouldn't know a Lady Gaga song if it bit me in the ass, but my hats off to her for coming out of the reefer closet. I'm guessing that revelation will positively influence the general public's attitude toward smoking da herb on some level.

For the record, I hate Justin Bieber's music, too. I'd rather get a punch in the nose than hear one of his "baby baby baby" songs.

But to say he has no talent would be a lie. Ever seen him play the drums? He's not Dave Weckyl or Vinnie Colaiuta, but he's damn good for a 16 year old kid.

(Still wanna choke him, though.)

2 things have stood out to me after a great re-read of this thread....that i must admit, has been pretty "i don't fookin know" after a good cup of mud and a overly done wakinbake.

#1 was ganja d's first post and then this from anti "her videos (bad romance, poker face) manages to come off looking like a sex symbol."

I don't really care if she has talent don't have it so what.

If your that damn talented use it to be a better influence to my 12 yr old duaghter, because as some have stated...music is very powerful, lady googoo is powerful through her music like all the other teeny bopper stuff. Some one will tell me "don't let her listen to that then".Well thats just as dumb as her outfits to say that.Impossible to do!

I let my 12 yr old have some control over the tunes in the car every day.I listen as a father, on what i feel is suitable for my 12 yr old girl, some i let slide some i change the station, and we do speak quite a bit about why i do what i do and why i feel the way i do about it.And when you "listen" to most of the music that is the "good stuff" to young kids(mostly girls i feel)it's a crock of shit in my book.

It's a odd feeling when my 6 yr old is behind me singin verses form songs that sound really trashy comin from a little girl that age to me.But this is the stuff that appeals to the public eye and mostly young kids....and apparently some older men....thats freaky deaky shit ahh!?!

there are obviously some closet "little monsters" in this thread.
don't get them angry, you won't like them when they are angry ;)

She's just another corporate fabricated "artist" in a long line of fabricated "artists" in the "anti-establishment" category.
People are so easily fooled. They don't realize that "goth" or "anti-whatever" is actually just a prefabricated persona formula that is planned by labels and managers to attract a certain buyer demographic. These are staged, learned and taught persona formulas people. And to those of you the claim to be "part of the industry", if you were really part of the industry you should absolutely know this already. It's absurdly common practice these days. In a failing economy, record labels don't spend large amounts of money to have Persona Consultants on the payroll just to throw away money. haha
wake up. pull back the meat curtains and you will find that the wizard is just some old white guy in an office pulling the puppet strings so you will give up your money.

I can't believe you let your 12 year old daughter listen to Lady Ga ga's music. It almost completely about sex in an inappropriate and unhealthy manner. Is that a role model you want for an impressionable pre teen?
When I was 12 I was rockin Guns and Roses and Led Zeplin and sometimes NWA. I fear the next generation is going to be a bunch of worthless emotionally weak bitch asses.
Lady Ga Ga is a bad thing for planet earth.

Are you joking?

Guns and Roses? Have you ever listened to the lyrics? Try "It's so easy" to start..

Led Zepplin? Go on and explain what "Squeeze my lemon til the juice runs down my leg" or "Whole lotta love" is about?

I won't even start on NWA, the list is too long to even consider, but let's say their attitude towards women is less than positive.

This is what you are offering as an alternative?

I've listened to all of these things and more, and I have 0 problems with my daughter listening to them, because unlike you, I don't think that my kid is too dumb to think for herself. Sex is a big part of a lot of music, offering it up as an excuse for why an almost teen shouldn't listen to it is at best disingenuous, at worst hypocritical.

Hell, I'm more than willing to admit my musical choices as a preteen weren't all that great, most of you folks are forgetting that, and going into "get off my lawn" guy in a rocking chair on the porch mode..

Let's see, explicit heroin use references, oedipal themes, not much in the way of sex tho..

Dunno if my kid would sit still long enough to listen to whole album. Not a huge fan myself, to be honest, might be cuz I gave up psychedelics a while ago.

Look, some art is made for children and some is made for adults. It is a parent's responsibility to make decisions on how and when to expose their children to this sort of thing so that their children will have some sort of ability to catagorize what they are seeing when they do get exposed to it outside the home.

Madonna was around when you were growing up. What did your parents do to keep you from becoming some kind of rampaging pervert because you happened to see most of her boob in the lucky star video as a kid?

I know *I* was titilated by that imagery... and that was long ago.

Your parents hated when you listened to Nirvana and THEIR parents hated the beatles.

The key to not getting old is to stay in tune with new ideas and embrace the change that is going to keep on coming whether you like it or not.

You know you're too inflexible when the new music sounds like garbage and all you can remember is the good old days.

There were plenty of bubble-gum bullshit in the 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s... but what you remember are the artist that affected YOU.

It's a odd feeling when my 6 yr old is behind me singin verses form songs that sound really trashy comin from a little girl that age to me.But this is the stuff that appeals to the public eye and mostly young kids....and apparently some older men....thats freaky deaky shit ahh!?!

Yeah. Bill Cosby had a bit in his standup routine 15 years ago about the same thing. His daughter was singing suggestive lyrics, too. This was in the late 70's or 80's.

Your daughter will one day be a sexual being. You cannot protect her from this. What you can do is give her the tools and the wisdom to make good decisions when that time comes.

I agree with you on all that stuff above.

I was defending her ability to play piano, write music and sing. These parts were not fabricated by managers.

That's true of every commercially successful artist.

Tool lyrics, courtesy of Maynard James Keenan:

All you know about me is what I've sold you, dumbfuck.
I sold out long before you ever even heard my name.
I sold my soul to make a record, dipshit.
and then - you - bought - one!

some shit being talked in this thread.

not my taste particularly but a pop star who writes her own lyrics and music is pretty unusual these days. her songs are catchy and hooky and i can appreciate that. also quite original for a pop star

pretty stupid to say she has no talent. anyone who can write a hit record has talent - its not an easy thing to do.
someone who can write multiple hit records has a lot of talent. end of.
