Trapped Chilean Miners Smoked Pot Underground
Adrian Chen — A new book claims that some of the 33 trapped Chilean miners smoked marijuana underground. It was smuggled to them in letters from their family:

One miner, Samuel Avalos, noticed how a group of his colleagues would peel away, he suspected, to smoke the drug.

But, he said they 'never even offered me one' although he was desperate to relieve the stress of his predicament.

The book's author, New York Times journalist Jonathan Franklin who gained special access to the rescue operation, said the small amount of drugs 'created more tension than it relieved' and claims worried officials discussed using a sniffer dog to intercept drugs before they were posted.

Incredible. Heroes to stoners everywhere. [Daily Mail]

That's so awesome of their families. Musta made being down there a lot more bearable.

But imagine if you got paranoid or someone not used to it freaked out.

That's probably why they didn't share with that one guy that was quoted. He's already snitchin' to the media! LOL

Smoking anything underground is dangerous because of all the methane gas. Most mine explosions are caused by methane gas being triggered by a spark. That's why all equipment, lights, fans, ect. are required to be "permissible".

Weren't these guys trapped by an explosion to start with?

There's a reason they left him out of the sessions, guaranteed.

He probably got caught trying to steal water or food, or tried to homo out on someone, he did something.

Yes, there was an explosion in the mine, iirc.

Yes, there was an explosion in the mine, iirc. But the surviving minors had retreated to a safe zone. And once the original shaft was drilled to provide ventilation, I doubt that methane gas build-up would have been an issue. And during the long wait until a rescue shaft could be drilled to their location 2,000 feet down, maintaining their sanity was aided no doubt by having some cannabis available ...

I'm glad that whoever it was that decided what would or would not be permissible allowed it to be sent down. If that happened in the US, I'm sure some officious prick would totally freak out at the mere suggestion :(

[EDIT] Oh. The OP's quote said it was smuggled. I had read on one site this morning that it was actually allowed. I'm sure it really was smuggled down, darnit. Long live the War on Drugs, huh?
