Just last night I was listening to LEO trying to take in custody a dude that was walking down a major street armed with butcher knives.
It was hilarious as hell
The other thing besides learning what the 10 codes are is you can observe/listen to how LEO notices/catches folks. Sometimes they'll come on the air with what they've noticed to warn the other officers. Great tool to use against them.

only reason i asked was because i read where some folks got charged for havin police radios in their home...here is my question..what constitutes illegal use of a scanner?...if they are legal to have in the home,why do people get charged with havin them in their home when it really has nothin to do with the reason cops were in the house?...these folks were arrested for growin a few mj plants and then charged with poss of radios..i still dont understand that..

I can't say. But knowing LEO/Prosecutors they like to get as much on folks as they can to use against them.
All I can think of is, it's being used (in LEO's eyes) as a tool in a criminal activity. Although I'm just speculating on that part. Sort of like a crowbar. You can own a crowbar, but get caught doing a B/E with one and all of a sudden it becomes burglar tools.

I think they see it as a way of giving us the growers (criminals in LEO's eyes) a heads up on their (LEO) activities.
But if you really think about it, if they are going to raid you they sure as hell ain't gonna be announcing it over the airwaves, or if they do, they'll be kicking in the door before you can even get to the grow show to tear it down
But honestly the best protection is just use common sense in all aspects of the grow and how you represent/carry yourself in day to day activities. Most folks are busted either because someone told, or they get to comfortable and let their guard down.

Let's say you want to avoid the parts of town where the police are active and all you have is a scanner and the damn leo's have encrypted radios what do you do?
Most police radios operate off a repeater, what that means is that the car or hand held radio transmits a low powered transmission on one frequency known as a input frequency. That is then retransmitted with high power on another frequency known as the output frequency, which is the frequency that you would normally program into your scanner.
The idea here is to program in only the input frequencies and run one of those shorty nascar style antennas. This way your scanner is silent, unless the police are transmitting within a few hundred yards of you.
If they are encrypted it doesn't matter, because if you hear them wherever you go, you will know that you are in the proverbial wrong place.
Of course if all they use is cells you are SOL but this will work for just about any other public service radio system including trunked
The input frequencies are available from several online sources and trunk systems usually have a standard offset for the inputs
PS all you need to do this is a cheap scanner capable of receiving the frequencies that the inputs are on it doesn't have to be trunk tracking or digital capable in most cases a cheap yard sale scanner will work

Perhaps if you live out in the country, But most cities have made the switch to APCO25, so that "garage sale" or "cheap" scanner will be very limited to its use. But then again "some" counties are still on the old school system.
To make matters simple, to know what type of scanner you need for your area. Go to

and punch in your zip. Thats how I figured it out.

If you read my post you would understand that what I was saying is that you would be alerted to the near presence of police activity not that you need to understand what was being said its a technique that has been around nearly as long as there has been radios but hey its ok if you don't get it as it requires understanding and its not spoon fed to you.

Whether you live in a Medical MJ state or not, law enforcment likes to watch and bust growers.. When there are helicopters flying around, its nice to be able to turn on the scanner and find out exactly what they are up to...
