Dry soil?

Does potting soil or seed starting soil go bad if left in a open container?

What I mean...does drying out, bone dry...affect it?

Completely dry soil can be difficult to rehydrate. Put in a storage container with a lid and add some water. It'll just take a while for the moisture to be absorbed.

There could be some loss of nitrogen (I think very minimal) through the loss of ammonia.

high Dutch, i think if you let it dry out completely all the micro-organisms die so you'll want to re-inoculate with beneficial bacteria and fungi, ...that is if you're growing organically, if not then just adding water back like Claude Hopper suggests should do the trick.

thanks guys...high bozo..:tiphat:

Well, I let my seedling starting soil dry out during the winter....my bad. When I germinate the seeds; they sprout up two inches and then die or go dormant. Ph is good...6.9. This soil worked good in the fall, but it is apparently fucked now. Out of 40 seeds germinated only 4 kept on growing roots.

Oh well ...back to the store.

I thought it would be ok but if you are killing babies throw it out. That's something I'll keep in mind when storing soil.

don't even try to bring that dried out stuff, back to life cost me 3-4week,, re potted in new stuff, and i'm back to life.

Never again.

I am a outside normal plant/veg grower, was never in that position of having to let that stuff to dry out, but, i know now!!!! Good luck.

Hi all,

I have had a number of issues with bad soil or bad solid organic fertilizers.

For best results I find is it good to keep those type of things in a basement with low humidity. After a month or so I will just throw things outside and use elsewhere for fear of their quality.

Bags of Soil are $20, most manures are that or even much less, $3 for a large quantity of composted cow manure. When they are old, just throw them away and get new.

Peace

Last year I started using rapid rooter cubes and improved drastically over seed starting soil. It has been over a year now since I used seed soil. I just got seeds from Rezdog and Dutch Grown and was getting my shit together to start them and made the mistake of getting a bag of scotts seed soil. Not supposed to have any nutes in it. I am now having problems again with starting seeds again. Good germed , cracked seeds with tails not working out to well. The shit was dry as toast and I soaked it for 2 days before dropping the sprouts in and covering lightly. Now having to rake back the soil to get them to brake the surface. Maybe if I had added perlite to the mix it may work better but I'm going back to the rr cubes :tiphat:
