*Gasp* I ran out of rice vinegar!

So i broke down and picked up a bottle of GH pH down. Guess i'll have to get with the program and do it the "right" way. :moon:

And thank you for that important and informative thread.

Yeah, well, i try...

I was hoping to find pH down a little more stable, but the rez went from 5.9 to 6.2 over night which is pretty close to the same performance as the vinegar.

So enlighten me, any advantage to using one over the other cuz so far the vinegar hasn't given me any issues in coco and it's cheap and saves me a trip to the hydro shop. :dunno:

GH Ph down is the weakest crap on the shelf. I use AN ph down, and even diluted 3-1 it's STLL stronger than GH straight from the bottle. GH is mostly water!

Changing PH has nothing to do with the PH conditioner. PH is changing as a result of grow conditions.

:yeahthats

Or rather it could be your water, I know before getting filtration system put in for well water ph always rose day later...was going through ph down acid left and right till put that filter system in. Is your water hard or soft? :tiphat:

I feel your pain Xerhoss. I was in the same boat a while back. I was using white vinegar to lower ph from 7.2+ down to 6.8 sometimes I took it to 6.6. Life of the vinegar was less than 24 hours and ph would go back to original 7.2+. I finally went to the hydro shop and was at the checkout with my bottle of ph down and told the guy what I had been using, etc..., and asked if the ph down would give me longer ph adjusted water. He said no, surprisingly honest but I left the bottle at the counter, thanked the guy and have not looked back. $2.00 for a gallon of white vinegar vs $15 for a litre of ph down with same results? Stick to the vinegar unless you can permanently fix your water ph, ie..RO, etc... Just my experience.:tiphat:

LOL! Your experience is totally devoid of actual "experience."

I have the GH pH down as well as the TechnaFlora pH down.

GH uses phosphoric acid.
TF uses nitric acid.

I find that Phosphoric acid is not as stable as nitric acid. It will usually take three adjustments over 24 hours before the reservoir balances and holds using the GH pH Down, especially if using an air stone.

I find Nitric acid to be much more stable than phosphoric acid. It usually takes two adjustments to get the pH to stabilize with the Technaflora pH down. And much less total solution.

On the average I use 2ml of TechnaFlora pH Down for every 3ml of General Hydroponics pH Down.

I'd never use more than 3ml per gallon of pH adjusting solution to stabilize, this is why I prefer the Nitric Acid solution.

Interesting. The city water here is soft (about 27ppms Hanna).

Seems to be a no contest. I'm not interested in RO. First i'd have to buy the system, then i'd have to add Cal/Mg to the feeding regimen. They're looking just fine the way they are. :)

Could give it a point by discussing the most effective pH down product...
Crash, I am surprised by your findings since I have also used both GH and TF pH-. I found the TF to be extremely ineffective com[ared to the GH, and I mean tbsp instead of ml ineffective. Could it have everything to do with that starting alkalinity of your water, and what elements that alkalinity comes from?

what is the point of this thread

Not that i owe you (or anyone else) an explanation for anything i do, but for the sake of courtesy - and in this case, brevity - let's just say i was in a goofy mood when i started this thread.

There are often less-expensive alternatives (sometimes everyday household materials) that work just as well as those that have been repackaged and sell for much more than the sum of their parts because they are found in a hydro shop. I like to utilize these options whenever and wherever i can in order to keep production costs down.

Thanks to everyone whose made a positive contribution. :tiphat:
