Question from a newbie:

I consider myself a newbie although I do have two (of 3) successful grows under my belt and I have been lurking these forums for at least 2 years.

I have been in chronic pain for almost 6 years now, and with the exception of a few months after my first neck fusion surgery I have been in pain the entire time. I grew Nirvana PPP and Jock Horror my first three grows and was very pleased with the results. I have taken nearly every prescription drug a doctor can prescribe, and with the exception of the ones that I kept forgetting my name, none worked. Until I smoked a little pot. It helps tremendously, and as long as I am selective in what I smoke and when, I can manage my pain accordingly. Something up and social for the daytime and something heavy for bedtime.

I have previously grown in a small standard wall cabinet like would normally be hung on a wall. The approximate interior dimensions are 11" deep x 23" wide x 31" high (although since I have a shelf in the top for power strips and such, I only have about 20" of height). I have managed to get some respectable grows from this very small space, my first was less than 15G and my last was almost 40G, both dry weights.

I have been growing all CFL in this small space due to size constraints and heat. I have 8 23w CFL lights and have always went straight to 12/12 from seed, even still wishing I had more space near the end.

Well all that has finally changed. I have finally converted a small closet to a grow space, and now have more space than I know what to do with. I have approximately 3' wide x 2' deep x 4.5' high. I have moved the 8 CFL bulbs to this space and supplemented with an old 175w MH light I had laying around from my saltwater aquarium days. Unfortunately the 175w MH bulb is an acticnic bulb (10k), and very blue.

I do not have a lot of money to spend on this, but could afford an HTG 150w or 250w economy HPS if I had to.

So to my question (finally :) )...

My current grow is White Widow and White Castle. I vegged for 5 days and then switched to flowering, all in the small cabinet mentioned previously with 8 23w CFL lights. I have now moved to the closet with the same 8 CFL lights but have added the 175w MH.

Do you think this will improve my yields?
Is it worthwhile to add the MH, or should I just bite the bullet and go get the 150 or 250w HPS and be done with it?

Thoughts, suggestions?

Bigger space/plants=more yield, more wattage=more yield. You will be very glad if you get that 250 or better yet, a 400. Search around online to find the best possible deal. Oh and definitely add the MH, it will aid in the plants structural growth and increase quality with the UV light.

Blue light like your metal hallide is best for veg. (if you didn't already know).

It will help, I'm sure it will increase your yeild significantly. Id say though, that if you invested in a 250 hps, it would pay for itself in one grow.

You'll save some electricity and you'll cover your space better. Use the MH for veg and purchase an hps. Or if you've got the time to train your plants and mess with the bulbs frequently, just get more wattage in CFL's.

Thanks guys... One more question, if i went with a 250w HPS, should I just replace everything i have with that single light, or should I mix and match?

I was thinking maybe the HPS and ~4 daylight CFL's?

I would. It will keep the stretch down if you keep them close. Were it me though I would try the HPS and MH in the bigger room and the 8 cfls in the smaller veg cab.

Your experience is greater than mine however.

So your suggestion is both the MH and the 250 HPS for flowering, while i leave the CFL's in my cabinet for veg. I hadn't really considered that...

Any ideas what kind of size / yield improvements I can expect?

I guess the possibilities are:
185w of CFL -
175w MH + 185w CFL -
175w MH + 250 HPS -

I wouldn't really say I am experienced. Again I have grown 3 previous times.

The first time I learned a lot and was lucky to get anything, much less ~15g.

The second time, I got lucky, and really grew out a nice plant. Almost 2oz's wet when i harvested that baby and I figured I had it mastered.

Until the third attempt... I thought everything was going well, I have finished my first transplant and they were really looking great. the next morning, I opened the cab and found nothing but wilted dried twigs and a few crumbly leaves...

This time I have decided I am growing with more space and light and trying to control things better. i work form home, so it is easy to stop by and take a peek to be sure all is well.

I am now on day 31 from seed and day 27 of 12/12. They are looking great although small (~12 tall). I just moved them to a dedicated space (closet) for the grow and now have the 175w Mh and 8 CFL lights over them. They look and smell wonderful and are really starting to come along. I am hoping they at least double in size before they are due...

That MH is really blue. What color are your cfl's?

At day 27 I doubt the plant itself will get much better but the buds should start packing on, though you're light is really blue from the mh. Getting more red spectrum to the buds should help with that.

My suggestion would be to get an appropriately sized hps light for the closet. While your current grow is finishing up rebuild your small cab (if it needs it). Look into micro perpetual grow. I would put the cfl's into the small cab with a sheet of glass between the bulbs and the plants and give it it's own ventilation (redgreenery has a thread on ventilation talking about this). Then use the two spaces available for a perpetual grow.

Even if you don't do a full perpetual having a starter cabinet would allow you to start new seeds while previous plants finished up and lower time between harvest.

I know severe chronic pain and it's a horrible feeling to be out of relief. Hopefully with one of the above methods you'll never have to worry about that.
