lets not get into sonnen. BUT

i dont see how he could have "stole Silva's aura" when in the same week he got popped for "elevated testosterone levels" (im not gonna go as far as to say roids) and swindling people in a real estate scam.

the guy is a total asshat who couldnt finish Paulo Filho when Filho was talking to a pink elephant inside the cage.

from what i understand he has hypogonadism, and was taking testosterone replacement therapy. this may or may not be a true, but the fact is there are lots of fighters that take testosterone replacement therapy and/or some form of hgh. drug tests or not, performance enhancing drugs is rampant in professional sports. i'm sure a staggering number of fighters have used it at some point in their career. as for stealing that aura, he made silva look frustrated and desperate, something we haven't really seen.

the guy is a total asshat who couldnt finish Paulo Filho when Filho was talking to a pink elephant inside the cage.

lmao, point taken.

edit: sorry, didn't see the lets NOT get into sonnen. oops. :D

testosterone replacement is all well and good. IF it returns you to normal levels. when said therapy raises your levels to 4 times that of a normal man....we have a problem.

read this

http://www.watchkalibrun.com/2010/1...ed-documents-ufc-fighter-chael-sonnen-steroid

EDIT:

make that 17 times the normal level and 4 times the maximum level allowed for an athlete.

interesting. i wonder how you get your csac sentence reduced 6 months with that kind of spike.

edit: and on a side note, i'm pumped for this weekend. great card on paper.

I think this is an understatement - this card is STACKED. I can't possibly imagine there being a better card all year. I hope I'm wrong - but this one is going to be almost impossible to top (on paper.)

Silva -vs- Belfort is just a beautiful fight that makes the card worthwhile all on it's own. It's like Raven said - Vitor will bring the fight to Anderson and has what it takes to put him away. As much as I want it to happen, I don't think it will, but I think Vitor will make it to the final bell and get in some licks along the way but ultimately lose it by decision. Anderson always likes to spend a little time getting his opponents' time and movements down before opening up so I'm hoping Vitor will push the pace right off the bat because I don't know how Anderson will adjust to that. I just can't see Anderson finishing Vitor.

I absolutely can't stand Bader (and I would love to see his lights get turned out) but I think he's being overlooked in a pretty big way against Jones. Jon is beast, a phenom, and he's earned his reputation but Bader has already been in there with Nogueira whereas Jones' sternest test was Vladdy Matyushenko. It wouldn't surprise me to see Jones put on another clinic (the guy has a huge toolbag that's constantly growing) but I think it'll be a more competitive fight than most think.

I don't think most people have any idea about Michihiro Omigawa (besides his less than stellar record) but since moving to featherweight he's been quite nice and he's a serious dude at 145 going against a very promising up-and-comer in Chad Mendes. I don't know how this fight didn't make maincard but I'm just glad we'll still get to see it. Mendes top-notch wrestling will probably end up being Omigawa's kryptonite unfortunatley in a grinding decision.

Franklin -vs- Griffin should be fireworks - I can't help but think they'll both just slug it out until someone can't take it anymore or the final bell rings. I gotta give the edge to the smaller man in Rich though. Griffin is coming off a long layoff and I just think Rich has more tools standing and that's where it'll probably stay.

What do you guys think about Miguel Torres' future? The guy has fell on some tough times and been finished a couple times over the course of his last few fights but I can't help but think the guy still has alot left and can still become a contender in the division. I'm of the mind though that if you're losing to only the very top guys (Benavidez and Bowles) that's respectable. It's when you start losing to guys way below your rank that you should be getting worried. Torres should take this and get a sterner test in his next bout.

I'm pretty intrigued by the Johnson -vs- Yamamoto fight. It was quite awhile ago but the big debate used to be whether Fedor or Yamamoto was the top pound-for-pound fighter in the sport. That's how good he used to be so it's clear he has potential and hopefully the UFC platform will be exactly what he needs to get serious again and win big fights. Demetrius Johnson is looking very promising though and if Kid has a bad night than Johnson can definitely eek out a win. It's far from the best fight but I'm definitely most intrigued by this one. Great matchmaking and good job for making this fight available to us!

Lastly - the Ellenberger -vs- Rocha fight should be a must see too. It's another veteran -vs- promising up-and-comer bout that should get very interesting if it stays on the floor for any amount of time.

This card is so good that there is just no way to get all the good fights on the main card so I'm real happy that the UFC recognized this and made sure we'll get to see all the really good ones through one platform or another (ppv, free prelims, facebook). Huge props to the UFC! Can't wait for this one!

Really? I think this is a perfect fight for Silva.

Vitor's far too aggressive. He's going to come in too fast one time, and Silva's going to take advantage of him. Anderson is just too fast and accurate with not only his punches, but his kicks and knees.

I think it's going to be a second round KO(strikes). Quote me :tiphat:.

Like I said this is Anderson's fight to win and I think he will, I just can't imagine him finishing Vitor. Besides being finished by Couture in 1997 when he was only 19, he's never been finished by anyone* and look at the animals he's fought over the course of his career. Wanderlei, Gilbert Yvel, Chuck, Overeem two times, and Hendo to name some of the guys who have / had tremendous finishing potential. None of those guys could do it, even when he was emotionally detached and had no heart at all. Not to mention he's never actually had his lights turned out ever so it's very hard for me to fathom Anderson doing it. Anderson might be able to get a stoppage from the ref - and I think it's a big might - but there's no way he's putting Vitor down and out, especially not with the way he's been fighting over the last couple of years (Forrest Griffin excluded, hah). I'm just saying Anderson will have to come out the best version of himself he's ever been and Vitor is going to have to be pretty rusty and I just don't see that happening personally. It's going to be good though!

* I know Couture had the fight stopped in their third bout but it was a doctor's stoppage, not Vitor's choice.

i hear you on the KO\TKO possibility, but what do you think about Vitor falling prey to a submission? id think he would like to stay away from the mat with Anderson, but anything is possible.

That's a good question! If we look at both of their careers historically, Anderson getting a submission should be even less likely than him getting a knockout but I just don't know if the numbers tell the whole story this time. Anderson has only submitted two people ever as a professional (Dan Henderson - impressive, and Chael Sonnen - hardly impressive) whereas Vitor has only ever been submitted once (Overeem). Alistair has been getting a lot of credit and recognition lately for being a striker with his K-1 success but most of his success in MMA has come from his submission game so there's really no shame in being subbed by him.

But in this case there's more to the picture I feel. Anderson has shown over the course of his career a progressing and developed ground game and no one can be comfortable down there with him. His body triangle is extrememly effective and dangerous - it's got to be one of the worst positions to be caught in - and his has got to be one of the best and it's so easy for him to get it if he's in position due to his long limbs. I really think that he has the potential to put away just about anyone down there but realistically he's never been a big finisher on the ground and he doesn't always look for or take hold of openings. Most times he uses his ground acumen defensively or to get in dominant position to set up for striking. His main focus on the ground has never really been to try his hardest to get someone to tap - even though he probably could if he really wanted.

I think people also forget too that Vitor has been a very effective wrestler in the past, although it was years ago. If it's something he's been training and something he's been trying to incorporate into his gameplan than there's no reason he can't use it effectively against Anderson, who's one main and real weakness is his wrestling. I don't know if he could be as effective as Chael was or not - but he can definitely plant Anderson on the floor, avoid submissions, and work off of the gameplan that Chael used if he has to. He definitely won't get caught in a triangle like Chael did and he shouldn't end up on the bottom unless he gets swept. And if Chael was hitting Anderson liberally on the feet - than Vitor can do it too and the results can only be worse.

The more I think about this fight the more I feel that Vitor has a real chance of winning but there are just so many factors in this one going for and against both fighters. I'm sticking with Anderson to defend his title again but I don't think he gets a knockout or submission. Vitor just doesn't get finished, even when he's crumbled and accepted defeat so I'm seeing scorecards for the defending champ.

now thats what im talking about when i say your posts are insightful man.

i hear ya. its almost like Vitor is the x factor going in to this. we havent seen him in so long its difficult to speculate.

regardless. its gonna be a killer night of fights. not long to go now before we get all the answers we need.

Most of those guys are very one dimensional in the standup.

Anderson has devastating knees, kicks, and elbows. He's just too versatile. Anyone who stands up with Silva is asking for a KO.

Anyone know when Jose Aldo is going to make his debut in the UFC?
Edit: April 30th?! C'mon that's sooo long from now.

Thanks alot man! I'm pretty passionate about the sport and have been about martial arts in general ever since I discovered Bruce Lee when I was around 7 or 8. And it's great coming here to have intelligent discussion about it. This isn't the sort of site where alot of kids or immature people come to play or try and rack up a post count so usually the chats around here are thought provoking and insightful as opposed to just pure shenanigans like on the actual MMA websites. Not to mention alot of you guys are aware and knowledgable about smaller promotions too like Bellator, Strikeforce, and even the overseas events like Dream and Sengoku and that's awesome. You and everyone else always bring the goods around here so I like to pop in when I can. Good times man.

I'm out - prelims start in just a few!

peace :rasta:
