Ginseng Anyone???

:wave:Has anyone ever looked for wild ginseng or have grown any? I have and ive done it successfully:jump:its one of the most interesting plant ive deal with these ilttle plants are a recluse they hide in the strangest places and some time you can got the spot one time and very few go there again and they are every where these plants only grow in old growth forest and it is very hard to find! the spots i know are tiny compared to the woods that surronds them so if you are a ginseng hunter :bump:take care all

yea it works but not a super stimulant thats for sure!!!fresh it tastes bitter kinda chemmy! the plant dies off every year and the root can get over 100 years old they grow kinda like a carrot!!the older they are they get kinda of a human shape to them arms, legs!!!i found one one time and when i sold it the guy told me it was 90 years old and was only about 10 inches long!!you can tell how old they are by the spot where the actual plant meets the root!!!!!!!

i used to dig ginseng years ago, $200 a pound for the dried root back then
likely gone up since then i'm sure
it is quite the plant, and i can be cultivated under artificial shade
natural is much more valuable than the cultivated, may have to check out the old patches again sometime

I have bought Ginseng seeds from the states 3 times now, and non have ever germinated, considering i have had three lots, im assuming its me thats not doing it right.

How do you germinate the seed? Or do you grow from cuttings divisions etc?

^^^ sprouting the seed is tricky, it does not sprout in the 1st year but in the 2nd
that's from the best of memory, read up on it years ago when i considered giving ginseng growing a try

Yes it takes at least 2 years to pop a plant from seed for wild ginseng!!you will need 80 to 90% shade and tons or good compost! I also think this plant needs all 4 seasons to grow properly! I dont think this plant grows past the mason/dixion! You will never find this plant on your own!some one needs to teach you how to find it! that may sound strange but there is a lot of factors that need to be perfect for this plant to grow!! Good luck!!!! LOOK FOR OLD FOREST ON A NORTH OR EAST SIDE OF MOUNTAINS! THE TREES MUST BE AT LEAST 150 yrs old!!!

Sounds like our local kind of magic mushrooms in this respect, everyone has to go out with someone to learn it at first.

I have often thought it might grow well in Scotland, though i dont know of anyone who does. We have lots of temperate woodland, and so many micro climates some are sure to fit the bill im sure.

Thanks for the info on germination, do you cold startify it in soil in the fridge for the first year?

That fridge thing is a good idea!! I am no expert but i have replanted seeds and roots and the roots will start growin in year or so!! Rotten or composted hardwoods works great for cover!!!

Thanks so much for that, im going to order some more, even if im an old old man by the time i do it, id really like to grow some ginseng, and to naturalise it in the woods here would be a very worthy guerilla gardening dream.

you pick ginseng in the fall, the root packs on weight preparing for the winter
it's much easier to spot in the fall with its red berries
