COCO in a DrBud SOG?

I also thought about doing a wick system.

if you look in the picture I have enough room to place a res. I would have strips of rope or micro fiber cloth dipped into it to water my plants. keeping an constant even moisture level would be the goal.

I thought about doing a wick. Also looked into microhempybuckets. I have always thought the gas exchange you get from the sumbersion watering was one of the keys to the yields that DrBud achieved regularly, so i never tried either.

Welcome to the party StealthDragon. Glad to have ya. Now that you are here I remember coming across your thread late one red eyed night. Wish I had remembered it sooner..

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Don't be afraid to ask a question There are others out their that don't even know to ask the question. There are also other growers that would be interested in the answer. Maybe with a little experimenting on your part you can find a good method and help the rest of the community.

lately ive been doing a wick-like watering system for the plants as its just so much easier, what i do being that my plants are in fabric pots, is i just flood the tray with water, or feedwater depending on if its feed time for not, but due to the fabric pots the soil sucks up water alot quicker than plastic pots, side point thought is i know how much water these plants will take when dry, so i can easily avoid flooding them.

So i just dump 4-6 liters of water into my tray when i have to water and typically with in the hr there is only about 1/4" to 1/2" of water left and that is typically gone in 6hrs afterwards, if the plants are really dry i typically just throw a cup of water on the top just to wet it out to allow the soil to wick the water faster when sucking it from the tray.

Definitely cant complain, as im seeing the same results, if not better and it takes me all of about 2-3 mins to water and thats once every 5-7days.

As for the OP's questions you had

for the 591 and 710ml bottle i found i needed to water typically every 2 days, 3 would be pushing it if they were in full bloom.

as for the pH what i ment by all that, was with smaller containers we have a smaller soil volume and due to that we have alot less soil, benefical bacteria, and just well room to buffer the pH of say teas that are out of our ideal range, in bigger containers or soil beds, or outdoors, you dont have to worry about it as much as the soil will naturally buffer anything you put in it, so long as its alive, or is a well structured soiless mix.

So with smaller containers we just have to be on watch for ph fluctuations gradually pushing the soil out of range, the way i avoid it is i water them with plain water every third watering, as for myself at the concentration i feed them, the pH of my feed waterings is on the lower end of the scale 6.5-6.8, but by giving the plants straight water every third watering it causes my pH to be stable just because my tap water is around 7.8-8.1 pH, so that counter balances the feed waterings.

really so long as you have a general idea of what your pH readings are on your normal water and feed waterings (those $3 aquarium ph test kits work great), and knowing the signs of pH problems (leaf twisting, apperant possible nutrient defincecys, ect) then you can easily keep it in line.

I use microfibre cloths in my wick system. Pulls up direct from the Rez plant drinks what it wants. Grower 'oldone' has swapped his micro cloths for a media wick which is essentially a tube filled with coco. All very low maintenance.

So u got any new pix of ur ladies.

Thanks for your interest #1cheesebuds. Much respect to ya. I dont have pics I can get to right now. I am having an issue with the usb ports on my puter as of right now. Dammed things just quit working the other day, wont recognize my external drive, flash drive or my phone. I HATE working on computers. Gonna have to dig into it this weekend.

I will post pics as soon as i am able.

Newer pics should be more interesting anyway. All the ones I have are done with different nutes/soiless mix than i am using now. Plus i recently popped the rest of my beans. Taking first cuts this weekend. I will have 10 bonsi mothers once these new ladies grow up a lil. Potentially have two pheno's of SC, PH#1, and Wild Thai and one of all the others listed in my sig.

Ha Ha...at it again i see....

Kaya likes to dog my system. He forgot to mention that when he powers his on it causes a 3 second voltage drop on the grid in a 5 mile radius. Its like being on the Death Star when they power everything down preparing to blow the shit outta whatever planet that was........

Security lights come on.

Greenpeace pickets his house weekly.

Occasionally he wakes up to it whispering things about assimilation to him.

As Tilt says, I'm using the Bio Bizz Light Mix and I'm feeding with Flora Nova Bloom.

I use the submersion watering technique. I water every other day. Takes about 1-2 minutes per plant. Since I use the same containers that Tilt does (Mini Tree Pots - mine are the MT2510) I can water 7-8 of them at a time in a 5 gallon bucket.

What I noticed thus far? Vs soil? I got a MUCH fatter plantlet than I did when growing in soil/perlite. Like twice as fat.

I'm very happy at the moment.

For the record I run a 19x14 250w cfl cab. 24 plants running perpetual with currently 7 moms. I use the mini treepots, but just switched to them. Previously I used 12 oz (net wht) coffee bags. I use amended organic soil that I mix hot and then cut 50/50 with coco. It is essentially a water only mix. Also just switched over to peat from the coco only because I recycle my soil and it was getting to be a lot of coco which doesn't break down too easily. Hard to say if the coco makes a difference over the peat since I have changed so many other things in my op since I changed to peat., and only have the peat in 10 or 12 pots at this point. The coco has traditionally worked very well for me. Next round I plan on mixing the soil without cutting, though the coco or peat cut is a great way to tweak your soil for different plants and is less space to store since you only hydrate the bricks as you need them.

I did notice that it takes awhile for the coco (gh coco bricks) to absorb any water. With the bags, I put drain holes about an inch up so there was a little res. this worked out well because I would water quickly and then whatever was in the bottom of the bag would wick up in a couple of minutes. I switched to the mt38 treepots (same as tilt is using) and that took a lot of the chaos out of my flower cab but I don't have things fully redialed yet. Since the treepots have huge holes in the bottom and I couldn't do my res thing, I am now doing the dunk method just so I can soak them up a bit more and that woks well. Peak flowering still doesn't require daily watering though. When I leave town I throw a res in the bottom of the flower cab and soak them for up to a week with no ill effects.

To answer the original question, I didn't feel there were any problems with water retention using a 50-75% coco to soil mix, but I never had it as simple as skipping amongst the pots and splashing a little water on the top either!

Good job on beating the nicotine habbit 311. I am about a month in now myself. 20+ year pack & half a day habit. I STILL want a cig about every 5 minutes! I know from experience though that as soon as I have just 1 more, it is only a matter of time before I buy a pack, so unfortunately I don't ever get to have another one and I get to want one for the rest of my life! yay cloud

I have a question for those using COCO in the DrBud method;

If you feed hydroponically, how do you get plants what they need all with ONE mix?

If you have a few plants in every stage of flowering, wouldnt you have to mix up a bottle for every stage?
