What's new

what can you do with 400 watts?

I came acrost a bunch of old gear, ballests, 600 watter, 400 watter and a 250 watter for $50. Its OLD gear.

Can they be used for vegging or my cloning machine?
I have 16 bulbs of T5 going right now plus a 6k room.

I dont need a ton of junk but $50??

Clones??
Heat light for the garage?

Sun tan?

Hell yeah! I have a cheap 400w magnetic ballast that looks like it was made in the 60s, but it works great. Just make sure the hardware is mounted appropriately so as to avoid heat buildup on surfaces (which leads to fire, obv).

Throw them all together and add a 250w veg room and another 1000w flower room ;) 250w is too much light for non-rooted clones, but it's perfect for vegging.

That's a nice plan.

Could run CMH lights on the 250 & 400, too, if you wanted an option to HPS & MH.

Just replace your capacitors & check to make sure the insulation on the wiring is intact and you're set.

If they look safe and functonal i bet they are. Old stuff will work great its just a bit clunkier but no reason it cant get the job done. For that price?? SCORE!

*edit

Oh yeah, since theyre so cheap now you can afford some nice new bulbs
.....that reminds me.....i need new bulbs.

400 watts used to get me 14.5 ounces per once upon a time.. but I did have light overlap....yeehaw..use em for whatever ya want..some old mag ballasts last a long time ...and you can usually repair em easily...buy em and you will find a use....I always buy cheap price gear even if I don't have immediate use....

400 magnetic ballast with Hortilux superblue mh cool tube
5 plants in one gallon smart pots.
6 oz
ran from 8" clone finish height less than 24"

I veg using 250 6500 Iwaski eye MH (the parent company of hortilux) and mars hydro LED. If it were not for the heat I would run more MH bulbs in veg. However, it is a jamming veg setup.

yeah, my grobro started earning his chops growing DrBudGreengenes style in a plastic storage 'shed' that stood a bit over waist high, ...anyway, he grew some very fine nuggets in that little cab for close to a year before he knew enough to take his game to the next level and he powered it with a 70watt HPS and a few CFLs, ...so yeah, a hundred watts of HPS is still a hundred watts, lol, ...you'll need a new bulb of course and you'll probably want to check the ballast to be sure it's delivering as it should but it can definitely be a useful light.

...here's another shot of that cab i posted above in it's original iteration before i upgraded to the 400CMH, ...what you see is my DIY cooltube made from a 'rubber?' plumbing joint and a pair of hurricane glass's i pick up at the local craft store, the lights are a pair of 150watt HPSs i bought as sealed 'vapor tight' fixtures that i then had to strip and reconfigure.

and here's a shot of the original fixture on the left and the 2 box's i'd originally planned on mounting the electricals into.

...this is a shot of one of the box's i actually ended up using.

...and here is a shot of the back of the cab where i mounted the ballasts and note that i positioned it in such a way that the exhaust airstream blows across the back of the ballasts in what was my attempt to passively cool the ballasts.

...and here is a bit better look at the cooltube before i hooked up the ducting.

...so yeah, lol, there's lots of things you could do with that 100watt HPS.

Back in 09 I picked up 5 ballasts off Craigslist for 260 bucks. 4 1000 mh and 1 400 hps. I used the 400 in a 4x4 tent. I ran 9 white berry plants. I would pull about 9 Oz a month with a perpetual harvest format. I still have one mh left.
