Cab sizing

Hey guys, I was here a few months back asking about cabs. Now growing is back on the table and I'm trying to find a suitable cab that won't be too much hassle to convert.

The main problem I've run into is trying to find a good size. I plan on running up to 8 20w CFL lamps for at least two girls. I'm wanting to yield at least 2 oz. What kind of cab size should I be thinking about? I'll be be topping and doing some LST or ScrOG so plants should stay more squat. Some boxes I've seen are only about 15" deep.

30" x 28" x 15"
height x width x depth

Would that be enough room for 2 or 3 girls, lights, scrubber?

Cheers

With CFLs you lose all useful penetration after 1ft and all GOOD penetration after about 8". What that means to me is that you're going to want is plants that FINISH at about 1ft tall.

Now, factor in the container size you're going to be using. if your container size is 10" tall, you know you're going to want the bottom of your lights to be about 22" from the bottom of the cab.

So, in your 30" cab, you've got about 7 inches to play with once you subtract for the floor. You can probably fit a custom built scrubber into that space.

I made one for my cab that is about 10"x12"x5" and it works great and cost me about $20 to make it and keep it operating for almost 2 years now.

Details of how I built it and pics and such are in my thread if you're interested.

I think you'd get better yield with 6-8 smaller plants rather than 1-2 "bigger" plants. Unless you plan to SCROG. You could really max out if you keep your scrog screen a foot or less from the bulbs.

Hope this helps, or at least gets the answers flowin' in.

So you suggest going SOG over ScrOG? I thought that ScrOG would give better yields in smaller environments. I live in a country where getting seeds shipped in is very very difficult so I don't have access to a lot of seeds.

I'm going to go for a walk down to the local hospice shop to see some furniture that has been donated.

Cheers for the answer.

I think SCROG will work out very well for you if you are trying to keep it to a small number of plants. You can also do very well with SOG in small environments. When you get plants in small enough containers, they tend to concentrate on a single cola instead of branching out. This makes them take up much less vertical space.

An example (Click for full image):

She's leaning over a bit because she got a lil too tall and was touching the glass that separates my lights from my plants. this allows me to exhaust the lights and plants separately and keeps my plants much cooler.

She was grown entirely under CFL and at this photo had about 3 more weeks to go in flowering.

I am using 6x42w in a 17"x17"x23" chamber with the lights separated by .25" glass right at the 23" mark.

I just found a cab that I want to buy.

It's 23" tall, about 20" deep and 47" wide. Two sections, so I could have a flower and veg chamber.
