What's everybody growing this year?

I'm getting pretty excited to start my outdoor garden this spring. I made sure to order my seeds earlier than last year, it seems more and more heirloom seed websites are running out of stock sooner each year.

I'm going to start a lot of stuff early indoors in February, I want to try and cheat an early harvest so when my Dad is visiting this summer I can feed him healthy fruits & vegetables.

Are you going to start early? And what are you planting?

Last year was my first all organic garden, so I tried just about anything I could get my hands on, and did little batches here and there of lots of different fruits & vegetables. This year I am only growing what I felt A) grew the best & B) what I ate the most.

Tomatoes:
Chocolate Stripe
Amish Paste
Belgium Black Pineapple
Beduin
Beefsteak
Placero

Bloomsdale Spinach
Rocky Top Mix Lettuce

Old Homestead Pole Beans

Carrots:
Parisienne
Danvers Half Long

Stowell's Evergreen Sweet Corn

Onion - Flat Of Italy

Peppers:
Italian Pepperoncini
Habenero
Serrano

Yellow Hook Squash
Black Beauty Zucchini

Herbs:
Russian Tarragon
Lemon Basil
Italian Giant Parsley
Genovese Basil

Will be getting bare roots of Strawberries closer to spring.

Stuff already in the ground:
Blueberries
Raspberries

100yr old Rhubarb patch

2 40 yr old fruit trees, 1 apple, the other pear. I will be putting in some effort to treat these with organic sprays so I can reap harvests this year(they are both about 25 feet high so I'm not sure how I'm going to spray the whole tree).

It was -15 degrees last night, so thinking about being out in the garden with my hands in the warm dirt helps the time pass faster until I'm actually out there digging. Can't wait! This pinner of blue dream is also helping :)

Use, good timing on this thread. I just got a couple of Burpee seed paks.
a Sweet Pepper mix (multi-colored)
a Steak Sandwich tomato.

Never tried anything from seed, but always had a big garden.
After the current things finish inside, their going into soil. The girls will just have to understand...

I got the Burpee catalog the other day. I can't wait for spring to roll in. Tomatoes(juliet grape, steak, romas) peppers(bell & pablano), beans, sweet corn, leaf lettuce and a few herbs & melons. Last years melons, onions and tomatoes did poorly for me, but this year will be different. I learned a lot of what not to do last year.

This year I will not have a garden or even a balcony to grow anything this year. There is only one community garden were I live and it is to far away. I love Amish Paste! I am a big fan of paste tomatoes. Last year I grew Amish Paste, San Marzano and another one that I can't remember right now. Love them. Personally I always picked stuff that I couldn't get from the farmers market. I loved growing all different types of uncommon herbs.

Nice to see others planning for the coming warm weather!
norichips, good luck with the avocado tree. I miss my avocados & mango trees. And all the citrus trees I had in Florida.

The Amish Paste were my favorite tomato grown last summer, they are so perfect. Very dense with flesh and hardly any seed/pulp. So delicious.

Got growing right now:

oak leaf lettuce
globe basil
rosemary
chives
tiny tom tomato - pretty decent yields off a few semi-warm spots.
taxi tomato =doesn't do a lot of anything this time of year other than "not die"
parris island lettuce
red potatoes from minitubers from seeds
cherry & apple seedlings getting a massive headstart (the other 1/2 will be germed with all the other garden stuff)

later in the year we'll be doing:

curly kale
bok choy
mammoth sunflowers & a ton of others that do well here (lovely seed yield, almost never a mold issue)
maxmillian sunflowers (first year trying them!)
tanana tomato (local variety that'll fruit in our cool summers)
oregano
savory
sage
zucchini & other squashes
cosmic wonder carrots
any of the potatoes we're growing out now that turn out well
head lettuce & cabbage
quinoa & some duckfoot
grapes! (trialing at least 5 cultivars plus some seed from a breeding project)
& we're putting in some new trees & shrubs, we bought the lot across from us finally.

i started getting things ready for spring time season, went to my local plant shop to buy seeds, ferts and more. they even had big bags of fox farm ocean forest on sale for $6.95! i thought that was a steal. but my seeds i just started for spring are

habaneros
jalapenos
thia dragons
many different tomatos
herbs ( basil, oregeno, dill and lots others)

i even grabbed a pack of seeds for a chinese lantern plant. anyone ever grew these out? my gf and i thought they looked cool so we figured might as well try em.

Yup, they're fun. You should look into "bunny tail" grass too, we did a bed with both interspersed, very neat look come fall/winter.

I haven't made an order yet but this is plan..

Hot Peppers: Habanero, Jalapeno, Hungarian Wax, Heirloom Lemon, Ristra Cayenne, Poblano.

Sweet Peppers: Flavorburst Hybrid, Bananarama, Chocolate Belle Hybrid, California Wonder.

Tomatoes: Black Krim, Heirloom Rainbow, Heirloom Brandywine Pink, Italian Ice Hybrid, Orange Wellington, Chadwick Cherry.

And thats about all i'm really worried about, i'll just get some basic other things like corn, potatos, greens, broccoli, spinach, cucumbers, onions, garlic, pumpkins, watermelon, lettuce, squash, zucchini, beans, carrots, brussel sprouts, peas, cabbage, and rhubarb.

I doubt i'll have enough room for everything where the garden is now.. guess i'll just have to buy more fence and make the entire yard the garden.
