Han Grolo's Peace Pipes Bio RDWC

Hello Fellow IC Maggers,

Sometime well over a year ago I had a dream. A dream to make a RDWC system to grow some dank nuggets. Buckets looked nice but appeared to have too many points of failure for my lackie skills. Current cultures are fairly expensive. I hit the ms paint drawing board and came up with a plan. Now dream time is over. This mother is built and been sustaining life for 24 hours.

A tad early to be posting on the internet perhaps but fools rush in. (also my smaller prototype rocked out hard)

So a brief description before the pictures.. Two 10 inch pipes, each 8 feet in length laying side by side on a stand 14 inches off the ground. Every end of the pipe is closed off with a 10 inch removable fernco quick cap. This allows for removal to clean and drain. They have a uniseal drain not unlike the end of an aeroflo unit. I went with 3" drain pipe for water exit speed and to prevent clogging.
Both pipes drain into a long flat 2x1x6 stock tank which has had a 1" bulkhead added to it and feeds a pump back at the other end of the pipes. I used a Gen-X PCX-55hp that comes with 1" MPT fittings on the in and the out. The feed line comes up out of the pump hits a 1.25x1.25x1 tee that splits the feed and increases the pipe size. The feed pipe elbows and goes down into the 10" pipes through a uniseal. Its important not to take the feed pipe all the way to the bottom as a power failure will cause the pipes to siphon out too much water from the pipes.

Many thanks to Big Tokes Bio Buckets How To, this was bio engineered to those specs. :)

Well Its late for now will elaborate more in the future. If you have any questions lets hear em.

Here's the pics!

Well a quick update. I failed to mention Im running pure ak from Female seeds in RO'ed Dutch Master gold nutrients. A few days in white scuzz has started to form on the pots.
Ive also noticed an almost fishy smell in the res. The temp is 68.

Per the hygrozyme thread I added .25 ml of bleach per gallon. 24 hours later I haven't noticed much of a reduction.

Also, my ph climbs and climbs and I am ph downing it like 3 times a day and I haven't noticed much growth, on the roots or the plant.

In the res there was white milky strings growing around the edge! So nasty, it resembled cottage cheese upon removal.

I just moved all the plants out of the system, sprayed the whole thing down with strong bleach water. Then ran a cycle of strong bleach water through it.
Remade the res from scratch. This time with tap water and .25 ml bleach per gallon. My tap water is pretty good so no need for RO if im just going to be pouring f'n bleach in here. Hopefully starting with the bleach this time will keep anything from getting a foothold. Im also going to be icing down my res until I can get a chiller.

another late night in the growroom

another late night in the growroom

Well iit pains me deeply to announce I have currently disassembled the peace pipe rig :(

Brown algae has come and I am having a hell of a time getting rid of it. I tried adding bleach and keeping a dead res. No luck. I just got done trying the richyrich method of slime prevention, from the infirmary sticky. It treated me no better.

I have started a BPP seed in a rubbermaid right next to this thing which is running with no problems. So I moved all the plants to individual bubble buckets. Unfortunately the slime returned on all the plants even in their own buckets. :/

Nugs being the bottom line, tomorrow they will all be planted in dirt. Perhaps I will fire up the peace pipe system again later on. I might add smaller tubing within the tubes as a feed to spray water and let it drain out the bottom turning them into oversized aeroflo's. Then I can focus on keeping the res aerated and chilled and not have two large tubes of not so turbid water.

I will continue the Pure AK grow back on the Female seeds Forum.
For now, rest in peace, peace pipes... gone but not forgotten!

Very sorry for your loss, what ferts were you running? That slime looks like what happens when you add H2o2 to an existing problem? Don't give up, try this again, that had to be a fluke... I try not to use it if it can be helped but when I get unknown nasties in hydro, I hit it with SM-90 and it seems to go away...

Was trying Dutch Master Gold Nutrients for the first time. I thought these new nutes might be the issue, but I used the same stuff for my BPP dwc res ant they aren't making any slime :/

Never heard of SM-90. Thanks for the tip, I will have to give it a go. I might set this up elsewhere and try it with some tomatoes in the mean time.
