Utah Trooper punches 53 year old woman.

Here are our tax dollars hard at work again. I don't know about you, but I will go to sleep better tonight knowing that 53-year old Darla Wright has been brought to justice. The incident took place in August, and charges were just brought up on the trooper last week. I don't think I would have rolled down my window either.

OGDEN -- A Utah Highway Patrol trooper is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation of an August traffic stop in which he punched a woman several times.

A spokesman for the Department of Public Safety declined to comment on details of the incident involving Sgt. Andrew Davenport, a cousin of UHP Commissioner Lance Davenport. But the department released three videos Friday that show the aftermath of a pursuit that led troopers winding through Ogden just before midnight on Aug. 28.
Officers first spotted the 53-year-old woman speeding and weaving southbound on Washington Boulevard, according to incident reports. Andrew Davenport and other troopers repeatedly tried tactical maneuvers to make the car spin out before finally cornering it in a business parking lot off Harrison Boulevard, a few blocks south of McKay-Dee Hospital Center. In a report Sgt. Davenport wrote, he said the driver, Darla Wright, "had the accelerator floored and engine revving in an attempt to push our vehicles out of the way." The sound of the engine cannot be heard over blaring sirens on the videos.
The sergeant wrote that Wright would not roll down her windows or exit the vehicle despite numerous commands from him and two other troopers.
Sgt. Davenport can be seen in the videos breaking the front driver's-side window, reaching into the car, and punching Wright five times to the head while another trooper deploys a Taser through a rear passenger window. He was taken to the hospital to get stitches in his arm.
"I delivered three close-hand strikes to her head in an attempt to gain compliance with our commands. I did this to distract and stun her and to stop her from trying to drive off and strike our vehicles or possibly run us over," Sgt. Davenport wrote in his report. "The strikes worked and we were able to grab her hands."
After she was placed in a patrol car, Wright can be heard in the videos yelling and swearing at troopers.
Troopers found prescription drugs in Wright's car, according to the reports. She was booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of driving under the influence, eluding police, reckless driving, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.
Wright doesn't remember much about that night, except the pain of being hit.
"What did they do?" she asked in an interview Friday. "(Did they) knock me out to put me to sleep? What did they do?"
She recalls the smashing of glass and "a black glove coming through and hitting me … just smack."
Wright wants people to see the video of the incident and decide for themselves if the trooper's account is true.
"Yeah, and how many other people has it happened to?" she said. "It should not happen to anybody else ever again."
Almost five months after the incident, the internal investigation of Sgt. Davenport is still pending. But that is not unusual, said DPS spokesman Brian Hyer.
"The review process does take time because several pairs of eyes look at it," Hyer said Friday. "That time allows for a very critical review to be done."
As for Sgt. Davenport's relation to the commissioner, Hyer said, "That has no bearing on this case or any other case whatsoever," adding that Lance Davenport has "a proven track record" of integrity.
Hyer said he could not say when Andrew Davenport was placed on leave because the investigation is an ongoing personnel matter. He added that troopers are trained in the proper use of force.

Okay, yes, the cops are assholes and used excessive force... but the dumb pillhead bitch leading everyone on a high speed chase through the city was endangering innocent people as well. This is not the typical "cops are evil and innocent citizens are being victimized" kind of news story that I expected it to be.

If I were the cop, I probably would have punched her too. Just kidding!! Aren't there spikes they could have thrown out across the highway to make her stop?

not taking up for the cop, but she was trying to run, that is clear in the video. i seen more of this vid on t.v. i would rather have her window broke and nose busted ,rather than some family thats just going down the road ,to get hurt or killed because someone is to fucked up to drive .

She ran, yes, but she was stopped.
And as far as the cops account of her having it floored, bullshit, that car wasn't moving, the engine wasn't revving, they had her.
No need to beat her like that.

Actually she's lucky to be alive, usually when they are out of their cars, and you haven't stopped yet, they say that you're trying to use your car as a deadly weapon, and shoot you to death.

She had it coming. We all expect that kind of treatment under those circumstances these days. Anyone who doesn't is living under a rock or in complete denial.

Does it suck? Absolutley. Does it seem unusual? Not in the least.

She should be thanking her lucky stars they didn't shoot her fatally with some BS excuse about how they thought they were firing their tazers.

I didn't get to see anymore of the video. Do you know how long they chased her or how fast she went? I did notice that it was almost midnight in Ogden and have heard that all the Mormons are in bed by 9:00pm.

I just can't help wonder why one of the police officers (either the bad ass that likes to punch women or the one with the taser) didn't just reach over and turn off her car? That is if she really had the engine "revved".

if the car was in gear, and she was reving the engine, wouldnt we hear tire screeches if the car is blocked and cannot move?
wow, paid 6 month vacation for punching a lady in the face, what a job...

she's awful lucky she got off with only a few punches...put a middle aged black guy in her place and he would have been shot to death before they approached the car.

If it was indeed a highspeed pursuit and she was being that wreckless then I don't feel it was excessive force. I'm not one to believe the cop's side of the story though, police aren't the most honest of people. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if half the story was bullshit made up by the other officers to protect their fellow gangmembers.

Man what is up with those cops in Utah? First that guy that got shot on the wrong warrant and now this. DOJ needs to go investigate what they're traiing their officers to do out there

But that lady did deserve it..she was clearly uncooperative and trying to elude so she gets what she deserves. I don't really have sympathy for idiots like her

I think the taser was enough to detain her, definitely excessive force.

Those were some pretty serious sissy punches that cop was throwing.
If everyone punched like that I'd be the UFC champ right now, I could take a 100 shots like that and laugh them off.

This really isn't all that outrageous, excessive yes, but compared to some of the stuff they do, pretty mild.

I'd still like to hear about that cop getting his ass beat.

Because that would be a perfect opportunity for something horrible to happen to you, like getting stabbed in the neck or shot point blank. Would you just stick your upper torso into a vehicle with someone who just led you on a high-speed chase without subduing them? You don't know what their state of mind is, what weapons they may have or any number of things that should be taken into consideration. All things considered I would say this lady got off easy.

I don't know exactly how erratic she was driving, and I am not defending that you should take police on a high speed chase, but I am elated he is being charged with it. I only wish the same for the man that got shot.

I'm guessing while this poor ol lady is busy shitting herself from being tased would be the perfect opportunity to reach over and turn off the car without getting stabbed in the neck or shot point blank. I mean if your going to throw sissy punches at some old lady exposing yourself to possibly get shot or stabbed in the neck ya might as well save your fellow swine by shutting the car down. Its funny how just because police brutality is the norm some of you act like this gal is lucky she isn't dead, lol. What has this world come too? Remember people news story's have a way of only telling a small part of the story, she probably got the last dozen maple bars from the local Duncan Donuts and these cops weren't having it. Peace, pot and karma. One Love:ying:
