"They all taste like dirt!" - Are "we" full of it or have a well trained palette?

"They all taste like dirt!" - Are "we" full of it or have a well trained palette?

I recent had a first time smoker try blue moonshine x blue satellite, f13, and highland oaxacan gold and she said they all tasted like dirt in my vape. I get much more complex flavors and can taste berry and spice and everything nice. Is it all in my head or is my friend not used to the subtleties?

Anyone else experience something like this?

Genetic differences can change the taste of cilantro, I can't see why it wouldn't apply to other things.

Having a well-developed palette takes training and experience. That goes for wine or weed. Some "neophytes" are particularly adept and naturally sense the nuances and subtleties of the sampling. Others may take more time and tutelage to grasp the subject.

:yeahthats
I can remember when I started smoking herb I could not say anything about tastes and aromas. All I could think up was it's harsh to the throat or it's mild. Now I can talk for hours about the subtle tastes of weed. The wine comparison was spot on - most of us can never taste tropical fruit or smoked oak in a wine but connoiseurs can.

I've learned the taste and smell we're looking for can be masked by over fertilization and more. MJ naturally has a strong aroma and taste. No reason to ruin it using every "Snakeoil" possible.

When you taste and smell the connoisseur level weed you're looking for; you'll never go back to dirt weed.

Weed absolutely....100% without doubt has different tastes as dictated by things like terpene content.
In vaporizers I can taste more fully the entire range of flavor.
When smoking I can't always say the same as the flavor is overrun by smoke and carbonization.
I will say that the flavor of weed in vaporizers can TEND to become generic for a few reasons: 1) you've already vaped out the flavor (lets say you're using a Volcano...and you're on your 3rd bag....flavor is gone and has turned to popcorn). 2) Using the same vaporizer bag repeatedly without changing would result in the same muddling and muting of flavor.

Some people that are really hooked on smoke, and that appreciate more of the chemical composition of smoke resulting from carbonization may not be able to discern the tastes of vaped weed especially if they are regular smokers of tobacco.

One other poster referenced that weed in general can have ablated taste as a result of overfertilization and different growing parameters. I believe that to be true also.

But at the end of the day, it's all subjective....whether it's wine, cigars, weed, coffee....etc.

The more exposure and experience one has, the more developed the palette becomes.

i think vaps make the weed taste very similarand generic but there are still undertones of the herbs taste... i know if i was trying to show off the taste of my weed i go with my cleanest small bong/waterpipe

the exact opposite of what i was thinking

I have one jar of herb that tastes a bit like dirt, smooth, dirty vegetable taste, I like it, its smooth and my best pain killer. While growing it smelled like vanilla. [too bad I have to quit growing for a few years and couldn't keep a cut] I guess I should say it tastes earthy and woodsy.

Ha Ha! Yep, Cilantro tastes like soap to me.

Some people have different senses of taste than others. Can't say any herb tasted of dirt except for some that had been buried in a bucket, and it tasted like real dirt.

I have found that vap can be a poor representation sometime as it sometimes limits the palette I wonder if it has to do with the amount of different terpenes avaliable or what but I know certain terps dont show up with some smoke which almost leaves a generic vapor taste I have tried the volcano and other vaps but I find the best for taste is the tower since it has the ability for bags and whip and the whip is where you can get the big vapor pulls and pick out more palette out of over bags Some great smoke can be very dissapointing through the vaporizor while other stuff can be noticebly better with it my fav to date was bubba k it showed its palette distinctively through the vapo

I find that many newer smokers are so used to being hit over the olfactories with strong grape and fuel flavors from the Cali Flavor of the Month range that the more subtly flavored samples just get lost on them. I personally know many people who would rather just taste the candy than actually get high. They drink 4Loko, too.

DJ says in his book in the selection chapter, "Sometimes herb that is pleasing to the mental palate is not so pleasing to the physical palate". And in my experience, vice-versa - many of today's super-flavorful strains do absolutely nothing for my head.

3D, your friend should be so lucky to even look at your stash, let alone vape it with you. Where else are they going to sample F13 and HOG in one session?!? I can see maybe not being floored by the taste of a sample, but to straight tell you it tasted like 'dirt'? If someone told me my herb tasted like 'dirt', I'd be politely snatching back my bong and sending them out the door with a pack of seeds and a "let's see what you come up with".

Dirt... whatever. Bring that HOG over here and let's see what's what!

One question> Does she smoke ciggarettes?

If so I believe this maybe the reason.

From my experience cigarette smokers tend to not get as much outa the vap as non smokers do. I think that over time cigarettes kill some of your taste buds IMO, I wonder if there has been any scientific study linking it? lol

I hear yah. I flush the shit out of my herb. The hog was on plain water for the last month of her life. I use coco and botanicare nutes.

starwatcher - No She did not smoke. I know what you mean though. Smokers are missing out on lots of things.

PondeLftHndSide - Thanks. Yeah I secretly wanted her to have the best experience possible. I mean my first smoke was brick weed. As far as her calling my weed dirt, I am not offended. I am trying to understand her viewpoint with this thread :)

accessndx - I use a whip style vape so the first 3-5 hits are the green hits. Some herb will coat my tongue and I can taste them for 10+ minutes. I agree that vapes give more flavor. Smokers can argue that the get a stronger high, but I prefer the vape. I do smoke now and again if I am testing moms.

GreenMind - On top of the dirt comment she said she did not fell high at all. About 15 minutes later we were all laughing our asses off.:blowbubbles:

WelderDan - I do have a good sense of smell. Maybe she didn't let it hit her nose? People do take goofy hits the first time they smoke.

So we can chalk this up to limited experience and a limited sense of smell?

Another problem for newer smokers raised on knockout Kushes - if it doesn't blast them straight to the couch on first exhale, they're 'not feeling it'.

I grew some of Sam's Thai Haze x Skunk once that even did that to me. The first time I smoked it I took 3 large bongrips and sat back thinking "hmm, this is pretty mild". The next thing I knew I was in my shower, repeatedly pulling out my bottom lip and letting the water fill up my mouth then letting my lip snap back. I didn't know how I ended up in the shower, and when I realized the sheer stupidity of what I was doing I launched into a fit of hilarity that almost became painful. The kind where you're laughing so hard no sound is coming out.

Now that I think about it, I guess I can see someone with an untrained palate detecting woody/spicy/earthy notes as 'dirt'-esque. I guess it's all about context. I'll bet the HOG has some woods and spices in it, my Highland Guerreroan x Blueberry sure did. It was like someone hung a blue tree car air freshener in a hardwood spice cabinet.

some fine observations there Ponde:)

as for 'dirt'-esque, the closest I have seen to this is when I have grown in media that was heavy in rock dust, then I have noticed that the smoke can have a silty aftertaste. Also, a crop that for whatever reason required extra doses of Cal Mag. Especially if not smoked through water filtration. A good cure helps with this.
