Benefits of growing your own seeds vs. buying fresh seeds.

Just started a grow couple of weeks ago and looks like seven beans survived my brutish germination technique.

I've always culled males or used feminized beans and ordered fresh seeds off the internet for each new grow.

Wondering about letting one or more of the males pollinate one or more of the females surmising I get three or four of each.

How seedy does a female get? Potentially how many beans might you get?

Is the quantity or quality of the seeded bud compromised vs. virgin shit.

Ha ha ha I only buy cheap beans so the cost on my last buy was only $30 for a package of 20 assorted and I got a bonus five when they arrived.

Worth it or can I keep relying on the internet and mail service?

Well, in terms of how many seeds.... The potential is staggering. Every little calyx can produce a seed if pollinated and the plant receives good care and flowers good and long. Like hundreds is no prob.

I would recommend that you read up on pollination techniques and go for a few smaller lower branches using a very calm and controlled technique. Too long for me to post instructions here. Hit the breedin techniques forum.

Please note though, parental selection is everything and while you may think it easy to pick your favorite girl. The male is something different. Do some searches on male selection. DJ short has given great info on what he likes to look for as have many others. Not always what you would think.

EDIT: Yes it can be worth it. I am soooo pleased with some of mine. However, I still pick some up from the pro's.

You dont have to worry about picking a male. It's not rocket science. Just get two or three of the best looking males, from different strains if you can, and cross them with the best looking females. You are guaranteed to get good seeds out of it.

make seeds on a few lower branches and let the rest grow normally sensi style. the more males you use the more wide your variety will be. making your own seeds can be incredibly satisfying when it works well.

Pollinating isn't a science, but breeding can be. Hybrids are made with a purpose; not just spreading extra pollen around hoping for a good seed.

True breeders grow out their own seeds, offer pictures and detailed descriptions before offering them to the public.

gingerale - With all due respect...... Random pollen chucking can produce really unpredictable prodgeny. I think that if you look around and ask the pro's like DJ Short, Sam the Skunkman and Mandala Mike, they do have traits that they look for. Heck, DJ had a BlueBerry male that was very special and was critical in many crosses. It hurt to hear that he had been lost!

Remember the male contributes 1/2 of the genetic material in the cross.

LittleAdam - Couldn't agree more.

It is very easy to get a few hundred to a few thousand seeds depending how you do it.

pick 1 male with characteristics you like. if you pollinate multiple females his genetics will be a nexus point for all of the related siblings from different mothers. if possible use a male from a stable or true breeding strain.

its cheaper

you get more seeds

its more secure (no customs etc)

more time in the garden, less on the computer

you get to jerk off male plants

you also get to dump a load on the girls

#1 who's talking about "random"? I said pick the best looking males. It's not rocket science to pick a good male.

#2 What's wrong with "unpredictable"? Crossing one male with one female will yield lots of seeds with different characteristics. That's exactly what you want. Some of those "unpredictable characteristics" might turn out great seeds with really great gene combinations. Grow out those seeds, pick the best plants with the characteristics you want, and clone them out or use them for further breeding.

Who's talking about breeding? This guy wants to know how to make his own seeds. It is SIMPLE to do and does NOT require a lot of thought or science to get good results.

Ill side with gingerale here as making seed is easy, quality breeding on the other hand does require a bit more knowledge and experience.

but to the original poster you can easily get 100's of seeds off just a couple small plants, ans will have ample supply to find a couple of gems.

Myself i did a similar thing, i bought a couple packs of some cheap, but quality genetics that i personally liked, and then off the first batch crossed the best couple males, with a bunch of females, in a targeted pollenization route (where only one area of a plant is pollinated by one male, and then documented/labeled it all so i knew from which parents the seeds came from and what their traits were)

I got around 260+seeds and some smoke off only a couple small plants in 4" square containers, and i have already have found some keepers in the seeds those made, also have routed out a bad female that had a tendency to go hermie in my grow conditions, which i got rid or gave away those seeds to people who knew that they could be hermie prone under similar grow conditions and just to watch out for them, but none the less came from good growing and tasting parents.

but do a search for targeted pollination i think it might of been (Pirate) that made a tutorial on here, but do a bit of reading and make some seeds
