Just fired up my new GE 3k 250w CMH. To the human eye it still looks really white compared to HPS of course, although I can see that it has less blue and more red than the Philips 4k CMH. I still have the Philips 150w 3k CMH in there and together it looks great. I think another 3 days of veg and then flip. I will update and add pics as things progress.

Peace and good yields to all!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps this has already been addressed, and although I have read just about the entire thread, can anyone tell me whether the vertical bulb can be used both base up and base down?

Either way bro. Standard for bulb manufacturers is to list Horizontal as within 15% of true Horizontal. Vertical as within 15% and if base up or base down is required they list as vertical BU or BD.

Mr Robby Rob those buds at the top of the page were finished with 400 CMH and 400 HPS you could do the same with a 250 CMH and 600 HPS

Good luck

Problems with HID Hut 400W HPS/MH digital ballast/bulb/economy reflector combo. Cost $205 with shipping. Purchased 8-09 and only got one grow out of it. It will not fire either MH of HPS bulb from grow. Thought bulbs were bad and ordered one each from HID HUT. Will not fire either of those new bulbs. Took ballast end off to look for broken connections, wires, etc. none found. Called HID Hut to discuss sending the new bulbs back(MH andHPS). Left voice mail as instructed and have yet to receive call back today. Really disappointed that I only obtained one stinking grow out of a digital ballast(china) and bulbs. Will go with Sun Systems in the future for my 400 watt ballast/reflector/bulbs. They have a 5 year guarantee on their fixtures and the cost is the same(Sun System 2 400 watt MH/HPS deal). Hope HID Hut at least calls back on the new bulbs. I expect nothing on the economy combo digital ballast deal, but will repost if they are stand up Company.

You nailed it, cheap crap made in china. If you go on Alibaba you can get the 4/6/10 dimmable ballasts for like $40 if you buy a bunch. No fucking way would I trust a $40 electronic ballast from china to last long or not burn my house down. I am running the SS1's & an oldschool hydrofarm......... All made in america motherfuckers!

Had to call Hid Hut back and finally spoke to a person. Informed her of the problem. No compensation for the cheap made in china digital ballast, but she did give me the information to mail back the MH and HPS lamp I purchased for a refund.

Screw up of all screw ups the Sun System 2 400 watt MH/HPS lamp arrived. Unpacked, set up and now it will not fire any bulbs or work. How screwed up is that. Called plantlighting/hydroponics and they said they would send me a replacement and a shipping label to send the defective unit back to the factory. When the replacement unit arrives/gets hooked up and actually works, I will repost to show what a stand up company they are. By the way always keep the packing material/boxes on what you buy, because you may have to send the crap back that will not work. I hope my blue mystic and snow white don't suffer because of all the defective stuff that gets shipped to farmers. It is a shame and ganja deserves better quality control by the manufacturers of these items. Peace and Irie MON

In order to increase growing yields, there has been a continual trend to the use of higher irradiation levels, which in turn calls for higher output lamps. However at levels above about 3000 lux the blue output (which prevents excessive vertical growth) becomes less important. This resulted in the GreenPower range of HPS lamps having only the increased red component, which raises performance because growth is stimulated much more by red light than blue.
so do we need any blue at all?

in a word, 'YES'.

understand that marijuana evolved to use the light provided by our sun and the fact is, due to the angle that the sunlight hits our planet and the refraction of that light as it passes through our atmosphere, we get more blue light in the spring and more red light in the fall, but, ...we do get BOTH spectra at all times of the year.

hope this helps, SOG

In a backhanded agreement with Someotherguy, no (all else being equal) cannabis doesn't "need" blue. You can grow weed with just RL. You can grow weed with just the YL of Low Pressure Sodium lamps, too. They will even grow under an incandescent light! You're just not going to grow the best weed. There is a reason that old heads used both HPS and MH (at the same time) to grow indoors!

A plant will adapt to whatever spectrum it is given with little or no drop off in photosynthetic rate, but different wavelengths cause different physiological and morphological responses. Under the sun, plants absorb light at peaks of ~300nm, ~365nm, ~440nm, ~660nm, and ~740nm in a UVB/UVA/PPF ratio of about 1/23/270. Cover these, tweak by additional UVB and you'll grow the best weed!

Metaphorically speaking, you can train as a body builder by just eating meat and potatoes. You're just not going to be a world class competitor without a balanced diet.

ATL was offering a free HPS with the purchase of a CMH. Looks like they still have the deal going if that is where you ordered.
That bulb goes for about 12-15 $, so a good deal.

Messen: well said!

I am using a T 5 Bad Boy 8 x ~ 50 watt HO bulbs, mixing 2900/6500s to simulate spring and harvest light spectrums
