Vote Yes for Compassion and Justice Nov. 2: Dane County Medical Marijuana Advisory Referendum

MADISON: On Nov. 2, Dane County voters will be casting ballots in a historic first-ever Dane County Medical Marijuana Advisory Referendum. The question, which appears on the reverse side of county ballots, reads as follows: "Should the Wisconsin Legislature enact legislation allowing residents with debilitating medical conditions to acquire and possess marijuana for medical purposes if supported by their physician?"

The Medical Marijuana Advisory Referendum Campaign Committee strongly urges a Yes vote on this referendum. It's time for Wisconsin patients to have access to medical cannabis alongside conventional medications and treatments. More than 20,000 studies and the experiences of hundreds of thousands of legal patients and their physicians in the 14 US states that currently allow this therapy document the safety and efficacy of cannabis as medicine.

Passage of the Dane county Medical Marijuana Referendum along with passage of it's sister referendum in the City of River Falls will send a strong message to our incoming governor and state legislature that passage of the Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act (JRMMA) must be a leading bipartisan priority when they take office in January, not a political football or an afterthought.

Jacki Rickert had this to say about the referendum, "Patients need their medicine! Everyone deserves a life with dignity. This is the right thing to do."

Voting yes is the right thing to do and a good way to let state lawmakers know there is nothing to fear from passing legislation protecting Wisconsin veterans, seniors, our sick, disabled and dying from arrest and jail for using the medicine they, their families and their physicians find works best.

The Medical Marijuana Advisory Referendum Campaign Committee will be holding a Victory Party on Nov. 2 beginning at 7pm, with results expected beginning after 8:30pm at the Cardinal Bar, 418 E Wilson St. in downtown Madison, and will be available for comment at that time and location. For more information contact Gary Storck, Dane County Medical Marijuana Advisory Referendum Campaign Committee, 608-241-8922 or at gstorck@immly.org.

76% approve! Yey! Hurry up and wait!

So what is Scott Walker's stand on medical cannabis? I never heard it mentioned. Is this really going to happen now that we are a republican state? I'm still hoping for the best.

Just because of the legislature change, does not mean this is out of the question.

Marijuana legalization creates jobs, lowers government spending and could possibly decrease the expenditures of the state. We have the perfect soil to grow hemp & cannabis. It would help create more tourism and draw innovative minds and business to Wisconsin.

We will still push this as an effort through the Republicans.

In the mean time, check my next post about referendum. Unfortunately we do not have a statewide ballot initiative process, but we do have them at the village and city levels. These create a mandate when put together.

We can do more of referendums around the state. Next round we've considered doing it with legalization language rather than medical as well as making them binding.

It's up to you to initiate the process. It must be someone within the village or city limits who files the paperwork, then at the end turns in signatures.

We're looking for people to stand up and help move this forward in Wisconsin. We will do all we can to collect the needed signatures with you, but you have to take the first steps.

Contact us ( madison@winorml.org ), or contact your village or city clerk. Or work with your count board supervisor.

This can be done for the spring elections or fall elections. Let's get some on the spring ballot to continue to show this new group of legislators and the remaining legislators that this is important to Wisconsin.

For all of your Madison NORML and Great Midwest Marijuana Harvest Festival needs, come to our new web store. http://www.madsterdam.org

Over time, we will add more selections and rarities.

Every cent after the monthly fee for the webstore hosting goes towards the marijuana law reform movement in Wisconsin and to the all volunteer organization Madison NORML. Membership in Madison NORML is as low as $4.20 . See the Madison NORML membership section at http://www.madsterdam.org for details.

While we are looking (with moderate success) for Sponsoring Republican's for a medical marijuana/marijuana law reform bill, there is a lot of hope for hemp this session.

In addition, we are looking for contacts in ANY Wisconsin CITY or VILLAGE. We are going to put binding referendum (to make a marijuana offense like a $5 traffic ticket) on the ballot in as many cities and villages in November 2012 as possible. This will change the law locally and send a message to legislators statewide.

We need someone at the local level to either talk to the city council and have them change the law or if not then for this individual to file with the clerk, and ideally would run the signature gathering campaign to get it on the ballot. We will support you any way possible.

2011 is about making contacts and fund raising to support our 2012 referendum campaign.

Please think about being one of these contacts. Post here or send a message to nate@winorml.org

Madison NORML Examiner looks back at the Wisconsin year in cannabis 2010

MADISON: The year 2010 was a breakthrough year for cannabis in
Wisconsin. While the year began with medical cannabis legislation that
ultimately failed to pass, efforts to support the bill helped lay the
base for new heights in cannabis activism that saw major media coverage,
statewide events and the formation of new alliances and groups dedicated
to changing cannabis laws. In between were many developments including
elections that on one hand brought Wisconsin two historic medical
cannabis electoral wins, but on the other saw a reshuffling of state
government that ousted allies and elevated opponents to powerful
positions.

A Madison-based attorney has his sights set on a possible seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
...
Joel Winnig, who was born and raised in Wausau and studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, expressed support for drug policy reform when he spoke at Harvest Fest last fall in Madison.
"I am only talking about adults when I reference legalizing responsible consumption of marijuana," he said. "I realize this issue is larger than Wisconsin, but our drug laws are irrational. Legalizing responsible consumption of marijuana could free up law enforcement to look into more violent crimes. It would save money.
"We need to change the law. We tried prohibition and it didn't work. I am not recommending marijuana, but I am just being an advocate of free choice."

DON'T MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO VOTE. Ensure you vote in the primary and the spring election.

Wisconsin NORML can not endorse any candidates but will post known positions of candidates.

The statewide vote will allow you the chance to vote on a State Supreme Court Candidate who has openly stated that he supports drug policy reform, specifically ending marijuana prohibition.

The court holds a lot of power in Wisconsin. All lower state courts refer to the rulings of the State Supreme Court.

---

All of Wisconsin will be able to vote for Supreme Court candidates. If you don't vote in the primary (February 15th), it's not a given that your preferred candidate will be on the Spring 20011 Election (April 5th).

So pretty much you have to vote both times. And you have to tell your friends to vote both times.

I encourage all Wisconsin Residents and especially businesses to call this phone number and demand to know where the Wisconsin cannabis jobs are?! Ask cannabis friendly business owners to call this number - even in other states who may (even if it's a long shot) consider expanding to Wisconsin.

Remember Fairwater Hemp Company?

"MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin businesses that create jobs now have a direct line to the governor's office.

Gov. Scott Walker opened the jobs hotline Friday.

Businesses looking to create or retain jobs in Wisconsin can call 855-854-JOBS.

Anyone who dials that number will receive a call back from the administration within 24 hours. "
