drug testing 6th graders in New Jersey......

BELVIDERE, N.J. – A proposal to conduct random drug tests of young students in one New Jersey town is raising some eyebrows.
Students at Belvidere Elementary School could be adding drug testing to their list of lessons when they move into middle school.
The Board of Education will vote Wednesday on a plan to randomly test sixth, seventh and eighth graders to see if they are under the influence of drugs. School administrators said they were confident the proposal would pass.
Elementary School Principal Sandra Szabocsik said school officials want to use the testing “as a deterrent.”

We’re hoping that the students if they’re at say a party or someone’s house or just hanging out somewhere, that they’ll say ‘I don’t want to get involved in drinking or using any drug because tomorrow could be a drug testing day,’” she told CBS 2′s Christine Sloan. The program is voluntary and both parents and students must consent. School officials said it was important to note that if a student tested positive, they would not be suspended or have the results sent to the police.
Instead, those students would get counseling or even be referred to a rehab facility.
A number of parents and students in the close-knit town said they would be signing up for the testing.
“It takes the pressure off of them that they have an easy out to say ‘no. No I don’t want to do this, I’m afraid I’ll be tested,’” parent and teacher Noelle Kornegay said.
Drug testing is currently mandatory at Belvidere High School for students who park on campus, join clubs or participate in athletics.
“It’s been working well in the sense that parents and students understand the choices they make and are able to make better ones,” high school assistant principal Joe Flynn said.
“I don’t think it’s to really punish kids as much as to let them realize what they’re doing and the effects it has on their life,” sophomore Jim Debenedetto said.
The district said it wants to convey a similar message to its students — that the tests are not about punishment, but about getting help to those who may be experimenting with drugs.

i think this is going over the line.....regardless if they have the option....that whole vision of a kid peeing in a cup is just crazy....seems like they are already putting them in the other system or just gettting them ready for it....

I hate to see kids getting drunk and stoned as young as I did. I just don't think teachers and administrators need to be poking their nose in this one. I can understand sentrys at schools functions for booze and whatever but not outside that.

If school wasn't such a giant predictable stereotype....kids probably wouldn't need drugs.
All I know is that drugs kept me interested in school in general. It was practically the only thing that got me through the day. Especially in college....I had no interest in being there.....spent 90% of my time skipping class......the only time I could withstand the agony of being relegated into a tiny plastic seat listening to someone drone on and on about whatever.....was when I was totally high out of my mind. Being wrecked at class was a big K+, left for awhile to take a "leak" and got lit. Came back quiet as a mouse....sat down....listened intently. If it weren't for drug use I wouldn't be who I am today. :)
I'll also add FTR that I'd probably be a chainsaw wielding maniac killing innocents without remorse if it weren't for the blessed mental healing properties of weed. It's the only thing keeping you safe from a meanie like me. ;)

In a time when school budgets are lacking, this school intends to drug test?

The cynic in me think: Follow the money.

Someone on the Board if Education has a connection at the drug testing company.

No bid contracts in Jersey.

Surely you jest!

Yes,
And don't call me Surely.

More giant corporation driven government bullshit.
Time to yank your kids out and put them in private schools or homeschooling.
This country makes me sick, and I'm afraid the invasive bullshit is only going to get worse in 2012

The children must rise up and overthrow !

Its so easy nowadays to pass a drug test though, just buy some synthetic urine (called QuickFix).

I do think this is a big bullshit money making big-brother scheme, mind your own fucking business authority figures !

THis is the same state that gave us a person who wanted to do this:

As for the OP, Ive got mixed feelings. On the one hand I don't think the state has any business trying to figure out what kids do when they are not at school, but on the other hand there are just so many parents that are barely a factor in their kids lives that part of me actually thinks it might be a good way to keep kids out of trouble.

I love both of my parents to death, they were literally my best friends, but during much of my junior/senior high years they just were not there while I got into all kinds of trouble with booze and weed, if someone had taken notice I might have saved myself alot of trouble.

Would it of been better if they would of thrown you into rehab the first time you smoked a jay? I know at least 100 people who are and were successful and using cannabis in high school. Making criminals out of functional and successful people is not productive, especially when it is a double standard in the real world depending on where you live and how much many you have. ( I liked the previous post where it was suggested that all the school board members, politicians, and teaches have to take a test first )

This isn't gonna do anything for booze which is what high school kids can actually die and overdose from. The problem with drug tests is that there is such a short window of time after using hard drugs/alcohol to be detected and cannabis doesn't go away for like 30 days. This would target cannabis users more than anything!!!! Kids are just gonna find a way around this, just like they always have and always will.

If my kid went to that school I would be doing everything I could to protect their privacy and blow the whistle.
