hey everybody. well the title pretty much gives it all away. my younger brother has a dual diagnosis of down syndrome and autism. He developed perfectly normal until the age of seven, which is when he really hit a wall. Lets just call my brother Ben(not really his name). Benny is now 17 years old, and has lived in a group residential setting for the past five years. For the majority of that time he was in a facility that was in a neighboring state, three hours away, and once a week, my mother and I would make the six hour round trip out there. Almost every time we visited, Ben had some scratch or cut or bruise on him that no one could explain. It was very difficult for my mother to leave my brother every week, but we could not provide the structure that they did. And unfortunately, since we were so far away, it was very hard for us to keep an eye on him, and make sure he was safe all the time.

Long Story short, after a few events that transpired, our state opened a brand-new facility 45 minutes away from home, and my brother is now there. This place seems to be a lot better, and there are quite a few less residents in this house. Now I will get to my question. My brother is approaching his 18th birthday soon, and at that time, he becomes a ward of the state. at this time, my family and I need to petition the court to become his legal guardians. That much I know already. That will not be a problem, as we are a very loving and caring family. The issue that might arrive is in regards to my father. Right now, my mother is Benny's custodial parent, but both my parents have joint custody. My father is an extremely unstable man, and has been losing it more and more each day. The issue is that my father is a prominent attorney at a government agency, and has used his influence and money in the courts to totally screw my mom out of any money when they got divorced.

This is my question: How can my mother and I get sole-guardianship of my brother? Without getting into any crazy details, there are numerous, numerous documented instances of my father doing really crazy, irrational things. Up until this point, my mother has not wanted to cause any problems with my father, but it has gotten to the point where he needs to be dealt with, and he needs to realize that there is something wrong with him.

Ok well I know that this is a lot, and I dont know if i should have put this is in security and legal issues, but i figured since this isnt anything weed related i would put it in here. Thanks for any input, and if a MOD thinks it should be moved by all means.

I feel your pain, Might or could your brother be better off being a ward of the court instead of the trauma he might go though having his family fighting it out in court over him? I'm sorry if I'm missing something. Good Luck and best wish's to your family.

You fight for that boy! Becoming a ward of the state could put him in questionable places...and people are abused in those situations sometimes. Get him home.

OK i probably should clarify a little better. in my state, when a mentally-disabeled person becomes of age, if they are receiving public aid(school district pays for my brother), they immediately become ward of the state, and the family needs to get guardianship. you know personally, my brother doesnt have any concept of his family fighting and stuff, so that would be good, but becoming a ward of the state is horrible. its really sad, we have come so far with the way we treat our disabled citizens, but a lot still needs to be done. thank you so much for the input, nothing but good vibes and love to you and yours.

Did your brother receive any vaccines right before his condition developed?

down syndrome and autism are not caused by ANY vaccine. Down syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome on the 23rd pair (i dont know of any vaccine that can add a chromosome to a persons genes) the causes of autism are unknown but it doesnt develop overnight it's a lifelong process...

sorry to interject, but i found that statement very unsettling...

My ex has a grandson who is 18 years old, autistic, weighs 400 lbs and is 6'4". And he has a temper.

I would slash my wrists if I was his Mom. I don't know how she does it.

And yeah vaccines have nothing to do with it. They thought it did but the research linking autism to the MMR vaccine was proven to be fraudulent.

yeah I'm not convinced vaccinations have nothing to do with some causes of autism. both my friends kids were fine b4 a certain vaccination(not sure of the name of it) but the problems started shortly after. I don't think its totally to blame but I think some people might have reactions to it...or that it gets triggered somehow.
Obviously its not part of your situation with your brother. I hope everything works out for you and your family.

yo master shake, not for nothing, but that entire study that a lot of your links refer to was just proven to be an entirely fake and a fraud. the guy is gonna get charged with mad shit. you know how many retarded ass people didnt get their kids vaccinated because of that asshole?

like the whole link between vaccines and disease is a fucking sham, and not for nothing but people who perpetuate that bullshit really get me angry. there are too many factors to even pinpoint what that shit is caused by. none of the links you posted have any info backing up their claims.

like dude that alex jones guy is just a conspiracy theory, devils advocate junky.

but anyway, thanks for the input people

I believe you are mistaken.. You are referring to Andrew Wakefield, whom I know little about. Only that he is criticized only for methods used, and some talk of falsifying data. He is the one in trouble...

All of the links I posted are concerned with Dr. Russell Blaylock, he is a brain surgeon and credited for creating many brain/neuro surgery techniques. He is not a fake or a fraud.
