Why did marijuana taste better back when it was more illegal?

I live in California, so I am about as aficionado as you can get about this subject, I go to pot clinics all the time and I notice the weed just isn't as good as the weed I would find back in the day grown illegally (sometimes). There is just that something about illegal weed back in the day that was better. Now we have medical I think the genes are getting spoiled we baby them too much, back then I think the plants were more hidden stashed away and done differently as a result. That result impacted superior taste and quality. There is just a classic characteristic of older weed that had more appeal, regardless of all the new genetics etc there is something it's missing. I think we may well have killed the best genes in weed by diluting it with medical strains that have been babied, not roughed. Darwin said survival of the fittest.

I didn't go to a bunch of clinics in LA but I smoked some really tasty and potent stuff while I was there a few months back. In parts of the country where it's still illegal you can sometimes find stuff that was AS GOOD as what I got out in cali.... but rarely BETTER.

I think maybe you just remember the good ole days a little more vividly than reality.

Yeah, you're probably right - just overly reminiscing. It seems everything was better in 1996, domain names, music, the weed, etc.

In full agreement with the poster above me, I think I would find appeal and taste in that which I produce myself! Especially if I simulate an illegal grow environment, all shady in a box somewhere in my house. It wouldn't be illegal, because I'm 11362.5H&S in CA. However, I can grow it like it is and probably make it taste illegal

But can you really dog the theory that we've been spoiling Mrs. Mary Jane's genetics by growing it all commercially massively? Sometimes even the most acclaimed of strains taste very generic to me.

Definitely happened in CO. All the good growers moved up to commercial rooms which is much harder to maintain quality. Everyone who used to put all the love into all the basement rooms aren't getting any return to go that extra mile cause market is so flooded.... You should grow your own regardless, you never know who just sprayed there whole crop with Eagle 20.

It's probably because there are far more inexperienced/ignorant growers these days flooding their plants with ferts and not flushing properly. Back then people probably used more rudimentary equipment and didn't overfert like so commonly happens today with good ferts widespread and easily available to everyone. Not to mention dumb ass hydro store employees giving people bad advice. Sometimes ignorance is better than knowing just enough to be dangerous. Just my guess.

at the clubs around 70% of their stuff is mediocre at best but that represents the whole growing community. out of every 100 growers theres maybe 10 or 20 that are really good and growing good stuff, maybe another 10 or 20 mid level, but the other 70 are all commercial crap producing or newbies.

I agree with this statement. If the quality indeed has gone down it's because the addition of so many new growers. It used to be a huge risk that most wouldn't take and if your gonna risk so much you might as well do it right. Now that the fear has subsided there is more people looking to cash in. Shit a ton of these commercial growers don't even smoke weed so there is no quality control what so ever.

but in southern california we don't get to see all that tasty outdoor like in norcal and oregon...it's all indoor quick indica fruity sweet hash smell. some of the sweet smells aren't bad but a variety is nice

Personally I love anything earthy, heavy skunky skunk, or sour is my favorite smokes. I think you just gotta find the strains you like and just make sure you get seed stock on lock. Don't rely on the clubs to bring in exactly what you want cuz its most likely not gonna happen consistently. I have a strain called purple pakistani on lock, I never EVER see it in the clubs, even under different names, they just don't have the strain. There are a bunch of strains in circulation that never see a medical club.

What I think california needs is less reliance on the clubs and more focus on farmers markets or patient circle groups.

Imagine a farmers market where you verify your rec at the gate, you "donate" 50$ to enter and get some exclusive tickets that can be used to buy/sample herbs and hash that is reasonably priced and setup in booths. The clubs aren't the answer ill say that

I have to totally agree with the OP of this thread... the only thing that seems to have improved to me is the taste. There's been a lot of reason's why mentioned already, new growers, commercial practices, cut early... a big one I think is lack of cure. I think a lot of growers are dropping it off at clubs as soon as it's smoke-able, and then they blow it all out in a day or two... turnover seems so much quicker now rather than my friendly neighborhood dealer in the old days who had the same batch for a month or two compared to a day or two... I think it took longer to get to him back then too.

Seems like nowadays things look good and taste good but don't get me high for shit.

(my new room should change that, I liked my last batch better than I was getting in clubs, but I didn't give it enough cure either before I smoked it... oops)
