I usually start them in peat pellets then when I see roots put the peat pellet in the hydroton.
run your water level high, like almost touching the peat pellet until the roots establish.
rapid rooters, oasis,rockwool,peat/coco pellets anything works fine in DWC. the roots out grow the small starter cube quickly

So I could put a seed in a 1 inch rockwool cube put the cube in a mesh basket full of clay balls and let it root into water bucket

yeah use 1" cubes but wait untill the taproot has shown outside of the cube before putting it into the net basket and covering it with pebbles

you may have to hand water every couple of days for the 1st week but from my exp the tap root has usually found its way into the res within 5-7 days and where 1 root goes the rest will follow

hope this helps
