Argh, Split the stem down the middle, need some advice

Hey All,

Was doing some minor LST on plants that are 4 weeks into flowering. By minor, i mean just moving the branches a bit, no bending.

The plants are topped at 4th node, and the stem split maybe 1/8 inch down the middle between the 2 colas.

Was wondering if this has happed to anyone else? Any advice?

Tape it back together, fast.

I've had half of a topped plant split completely off before, and was able to tie/tape it back on and save it.

At that point I think you're basically grafting but you might as well try if it just happened!

EDIT: So the size of the break is only 1/8"? No biggie then, I'd tie that area tight though so that it won't get any worse in the future.

yeah it was a tiny split, but enough to scare the crap outta me!

I dont have any gardners tape on my at the moment, so i just zip tied and twistied them together tight.

Would you say your yield was compromised due to splitting?

Here is a pic of my ghetto fix :/

I've done the exact thing in the past. Its amazing how easily some of those "wishbone" joints will seperate.
I've had one split several inches down the main stem and after being taped it showed no signs of stress! I was shocked! Duct tape to the rescue.

I now dont pull these joints apart at all. If I have to, I bend them the other way so they cross.

Good Luck,
Buds

as long as the colas dont need supporting i would advise not taping it. the tissue will dry and toughen up. tape means that air cant get to it and also can constrict the stems as they grow. just be careful with it for a few days and nature will do the rest.
if you are worried that the split will get worse under the weight of the colas then wire use wire to pull the two back together a bit further up, but check now and again to make sure it is not strangling the branches as they thicken
these plants can take all sorts of punishment

and end up just fine ;)

Great fix NinjaG. duct tape, bailing wire, and zip ties nothing you cant fix! Looks healthy, no stress. I tend to agree with VG about letting it heal unless that branch is supporting some weight. NS

never had any problem with tape thats all i have ever used to fix breaks and works fine. Its seems to be far enough along where it isnt going to grow much more so the zip tie should be fine till harvest. If you get a break when there still growing alot just remove the tape, zip tie whatever you you use in about a week.

My last run I split the stem at the node where she was topped. A pretty decent split also about 1-1.5 inches down the stem, and this was the main node. I tied it back together with the string I use to lst. Never shown a bit of stress. And when the plant came down the stem had healed and grown around the string. Just like when a tree grows thru and around a fence.

There is nothing u can fix on these plants! Looks like ur zip tie will be fine.

Speaking from pure experience here, just so you know it's not pure BS fertilizer...

use a little tape, even try to splint it up so the split is closed. Then, using a toothpick, or some similar implement, apply a little bit of superglue to each side of the split. You can do this on woody parts of the plant, and you can even use it on green, bendy plant material. It really works!

Just to give you an idea on one occasion where it saved my asp! This broke and was actually hanging when I tried to train it. When this worked, I decided to keep a few tubes in my kit all the time!

I only tied it because it was too heavy to support it self. I have since loosened the wire around it to where it hangs away a little so that fresh air will get to the wound and start the natural healing process. You should be fine. =)
