I need your advice, i just picked up a new cabinet to switch from my current box. the dimensions are 31in High X 20in Deep X 22in Wide.
I have 4 PL-Ls i can switch over from my other box...what lighting would you recommend for me if you had this box? im thinking PL-L on the sides and a HPS in there...is there enough head space? think i will have cooling issues with my dimensions? what wattage should i go with and what ballast?...any links to where to purchase will greatly be appreciated!
heres my box (Just stripped the interior, needs myler etc.):
( 31H x 22W x 20D )

I'd personally rock a 150-250w HPS in there, depending on how much fan noise you can tolerate. I always like HIDhut for cheap low wattage digital ballasts. You can also go the e-conolight.com route if you fancy yourself a DIYer.

check your local Craigslist in the Farm and garden section, sometimes you'll find some good growing gear there for cheap. I bought my current cab and light setup off Craigslist matter of fact. Best thing about there is there are NO RECORDS of the transaction, specially if you pay in cash ;) I don't really know any good places to buy new though that was how I got my setup and so far it's worked just fine for me.

Using CFL or T5 fluorescent will make your life 10x easier and make it more stealthy because you'll need less ventilation (less noise)

I agree with scurred 100%.

Im runnin a cab that's about that size and use a variety of different spectrum cfls above the canopy and a couple 4ft flouros in the corners for side lighting.

I actually know a number of people who have had great experiences and results using cfls and would recommend them to anyone who is just wanting to grow their meds on a small scale to meet their own personal needs.

So you have 4 lights at 55w, which is 220w total, and you want to add a 150w hps? that's almost 400w of light in 3 sq ft. Way overkill

31in x 22in x 20in = 2.58ft x 1.83ft x 1.67ft...which equals 7.89cubic feet...volumetrically. if i have 1 PLL on each wall vertically that means 1 55w bulb is shining on the wall opposite to it (2.58ft x 1.67ft) so its not like 220watts are all shining on one 3 square foot canopy...the light is distributed due to the 360 degree vertical arrangement. the top however will need some lighting...would a 150watt hps really be overkill given all this????

I think your right on track, you know the 4 - PLL's are not enough from your last grow...

The floor is almost 4 sq ft but your going Ver as well, so in reality your at almost 12 sq ft. 400w devided by 12 = 30w per ft, as a general rule you want 30 to 50 watts per sq ft...

A 150w hps on top would do wonders or you could do 3 more 55w PLL's on top as well but I would prefer the 150w...

Ventilation is as important as lighting in a cab, so beef that up as well...

Good Luck on your new Cab...:tiphat:

Height isn't factored into square footage. A 150w HPS at the top of the cab, hung above the plants, is the only lighting you need. Your cab is not tall, therefor your plants won't get big enough for you to even benefit from side lighting. Check out this one guys cab, I think it's in the micro area.. I'm not sure how big the cab is but it can't be any smaller than yours and he lights it with a single 150w HPS, uses SCRoG to train them and yields around a QP I believe.

With scrog you won't need side lighting either, and I don't see any other way you're going to completely control the plant height in there.

And dont get a digital hps light unless you get bulbs rated for digital ballasts, otherwise your bulbs will die within a few months. I'd just get a standard magnetic ballast, cheaper, and it seems digitals arent perfect yet because of bulb issues.

im using a hidhut brand 250w digital ballast with normal bulbs from homedepot they run for a few grows..even the cheaper bulbs run about as long as the higher priced.......some bulbs wont work correct with a digital ballast.....but yeah go with hidhut they ship stealthy and have good deals ventilation id get a 120ish cfm fan on a speed controll with a diy carbon filter hidhut has some good deals for grow products check ebay also.....you wont need a inline fan as there cfm ratings are probly too high for what your running id get a squirrel cage blower you treat em right they last a while.....
