I went to a bunch of stores and some of them said the Nikon is better and other stores said the Cannon is better. Which one should I get and why?

Snype,

Will you be doing video or just strictly still shots? if video as well, the the Canon T2i now does upto 1080p/30 or 720P/60. The D90 does HD vid but not up to those specs.
Most of my photographer friends all have a D90 in their bags. They tell me it is a great value for an all around still cam with a sturdy/professional feeling body. They also say the sensor in the D90 is the best you'll get in that price range. The T2i has more megapixels but they tell me the D90 still takes better quality pics due to the sensor quality.

I do not own either yet as I have been looking at the same comparisons but waiting till spring to purchase due to finances.

Here is a side by side I found helpful though, maybe will help you as well while waiting for other owners to chime in on their personal experiences:

One feature I do prefer on the D90 over the Canon T2i, as I have seen both in use many times, is the red eye beam. The canon uses a strobe style effect with it's flash to correct red eye and I'm not a fan of the strobe effect. It tends to distract people and causes them to blink more when you are trying to take candid shots.

So far, as you can probably tell, I am leaning towards the D90 for my future purchase.

Nice info! At first I was leaning more towards the Cannon but after I saw the D90, I was leaning towards that. I always thought the Mega Pixels meant something but now I see it's not everything. I'm pretty sure that I'm going with the Nikon. Thanks for the response!

I have to vote for the Canon.
Former Nikon user. I switched over to the Canon because of the superior lens catalog and mainly the HD capabilities most of the new models they offer. I have a 7D and love it.
The T2i is basically a 7D in a smaller plastic shell. Same sensor and same HD capabilities.
You should also look into the Canon 60D. Its their newest baby in that price range.

I'm not a believer that brand A takes better pics than brand B. It is 100% up to the user's photography skills IMO.

I was hoping this wouldn't happen. Now I really want to do more research. When I compare both models on the web, it shows the Nikon to be better but most stores say that the Cannon is better. I'm not using the camera for video.

One other thing that may help.... I have big hands .... XL gloves. The Canon has a smaller grip pattern on their body then the Nikon. The Nikon there for feels better in my hand... but this will depend for you on what size your hands are.

Snype I almost sold my D40 & pulled the trigger on the D90 on black friday but i found a ton of bad reviews on Amazon.... Seems like many have alot of problems right outta the box and Nikon wont replace them they want to fix/repair them... Def do alil research before buying.... One review i read said dont buy frm amazon buy from a big box store ie. BestBuy bc BB will replace your camera with a new one while amazon will want you to send the one you recieve in for repair even if not working right out of the box...

I have the same problem. Big hands. I definitely didn't like the smallish feel to the T2i.
But the Canon 7D and 60D have much bigger casings and feel more comfortable than my Nikon D80 was.

I definitely wouldn't buy from amazon. BHphoto.com is your best bet.

No one has really asked, but what do you want to shoot? That might make a difference, but I'm not sure how since I know little about cameras really. I do have a T2i and since I started with Canon I will most likely stick with it til the end. I usually do that with brands I start with and like. Not sure if this post helped you at all lol, I just got a T2i and I love it, thats all I can really say!

Both are great cameras. Unless your an advanced user it won't make a difference in the pictures you take because it will be in full auto.

MP doesn't matter unless you want to blow it up huge and have it printed. Even then the 2mp difference between 2 competing models will not make any difference. MP should be the last thing you take into consideration between prosumer dslrs because they are all close in mp.

I use the D90 LOVE IT. Unless you use the camera to make a living from the D90 will provide you with outstanding photograph's. The body is only part of taking great pics. The Lens you use has a huge impact on the images you capture.

My setup is

D90 Body
Prime 60mm macro 1:1 2.8
18-105 zoom 3.5-5.6G
Extenssion tubs with AF
Speed Light SB-600
Neewer Macro LED Ring Light
Nikon BR-5 Reversing Ring

Total cost 2200$

Hope that helps

Wrong order, IMHO.

You might want to decide what your primary purpose for the camera might be, for a start. Capabilities of the camera body, like ISO range, quality of the sensor & controls is important -- but not less so than the lenses available.

For example, I am interested in macro photography and would like to take some really great portraits of cannabis in flower. The following items:

macro light: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/194480-USA/Canon_2356A002_MR_14EX_TTL_Macro_Ring.html
macro light: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/239656-USA/Canon_2357A002_MT_24EX_Macro_Twin_Lite.html
macro lens: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/183199-USA/Canon_2540A002_Macro_Photo_MP_E_65mm.html

would compel me to consider the Canon EOS T2I, or even the EOS 7D, over the Nikon D90 (as an example).

YMMV

I would agree if your only going to take Macro shoots. Canon has Nikon beat in this area for sure that lens is the bee's knee's of macro lens. Nikon does not make a lens that will do what that lens can 5:1 mag crazy.

Yep! I'm not knocking Nikon, or Nikkor lenses.

IIRC, there is one or two microscopes that are specifically built to make use of Nikon digital camera bodies (or was that Olympus?). Olympus cameras and Zuiko lenses have been considered A-1 top quality, as well.

The only point I was trying to make is that you can work backward from the requirements for a specific application and arrive at a solution. Buying the digital SLR camera first, and then looking at lenses and accessories available to solve a specific application might leave you "painted into a corner", so to speak.
