It all has fucking root aphid eggs, if you want organic and clean get some coco & amend it with the all natural goodies :canabis:

Roots has gone to crap? Link to sources? I know it caught a brief bad rap on the west coast 3-4 years ago but those issues had since been sorted out...last I checked....

Probably the issue(s) that you're talking about was back 2 and 3 years ago, Roots (aka Aqua Serene) was using 3 or 4 different soil mixing/packing companies - as do all of the boutique potting soil companies. They simply don't have enough volume to invest the $250,000.00 (entry level) for a professional soil mixer that can handle 10+ cubic yards at a single time. Again this is an entry-level mixer.

But the issue isn't with who is mixing their 'potting soils' - it's their choice of base products, i.e. specific brands of peat moss, EWC, etc. It ain't a big deal - good marketing of a random potting soil.

I'll give them this though - at least they added glacial rock dust.

Bio-bizz light mix or all-mix. never ever ever had any insect problem due to poor soil. you get a big ol bag for the same price as a smaller foxfarm bag. the quality is of the highest and i have never had to amend my soils with a single thing. they are organic by everyone in the worlds standards. i will boast this soil to everyone i know becuase it truely is the greatest as is organic soil you will find. you will get root systems that will blow your mind and growth rates that will make you take notice. when used in conjunction with compost teas you will get growth rates and yeilds that are comparable to hydro only with the taste and smoothness of organic soil grown.

i used fox farm for years happy to support and american company with such a wonderful mission. the only problem is their products are over priced for the quality. don't get me wrong i grew some nice buds with fox farm, but after my first bag of light mix there was no turning back.

I am using Earth Juice's Amazon Bloom bagged soil this cycle. It has a lot of the same stuff you read about being added to home made soils on these pages. I took two bags of it (1.5cf each) added a 30lb bag of EWC, 2 cups of alfalfa meal, perlite (to a third of the total) found the ph a little high added peat to get the ph lower, got it to ph6, then added some pro mix (ph7) and dolomite lime to get the ph at 6.4. It is a fairly new soil, to me anyway, and not much information on growing in it. It will be several months before I can draw any conclusions on this mix.

A couple of observations from my experience, first home amended soils seem to do better than store bought soils as far as plant health and yeilds. And most failures, that I have noticed, seem to be from over doing it, either at the amending stage or with too much added to the soil during a grow. So if you plan on adding a lot of teas and such with potent ingredients, or a full nute line up, it is best to go lightly on the amendments.....scrappy

Hey scrapp, when you start getting results in the EJAB could you post the results in the Earth Juice Amazon Bloom Soil thread i made?

Just Right Xtra Potting Mix contains:

  • general_hydroponics_icon.jpg
Cocotek Coconut Coir: a high quality, low sodium, medium contains pith, fibers and coconut chips. This blend creates a more diverse and less compact growing medium
  • general_hydroponics_icon.jpg
Ancient Forest Humus: has incredible microbiological diversity the ultimate natural compost
  • Large Perlite: non-toxic sterile odorless material improves drainage and aeration that promotes strong root development
  • Premium Earthworm Castings: red Earthworms are fed and an all organic diet and vermicompost generated contains a diverse and abundant microbiological community
  • Miadenwell Diatomite Silica Stone: a rich source of plant available silica which is widely documented to stimulate dramatic growth in plants thereby increasing their resistance to disease
  • general_hydroponics_icon.jpg
Rare Earth: derived from ancient seabed deposits of prophylactic clay that are blended with fulvate ore
  • general_hydroponics_icon.jpg
SubCulture M: a mycorhizae root inoculant that contains a wide diversity of endo and ecto mycorrhizal fungi that colonize plant roots
  • general_hydroponics_icon.jpg
SubCulture B: a probioticinoculum of beneficial microorganisms that will help increase the vitality and yield in all plants
  • Natural Sulfate of Potash is a natural potash mineral contains 51 percent potash 18 percent sulfur. It also contains trace amounts of calcium and magnesium. Potassium is second only to nitrogen in terms of the abundance needed for plants.

Agreed, Roots blows, only two of their products do I semi trust, their Big worm EWC and their trinity, both of which I can make at home when i have enough time.

Also only a total retard would pay 250,000 for a ten cubic yard soil mixer, my friends family owns one of the largest wholesale greenhouses on the east coast (over 100 acres of GH at just one location) they sell plug starts and so on, they make their own mix too. We built the mixer ourselves. (I got to help them) We bought an old beat to sh@t cement mixer, gutted it, tore off the mixer and engine, and custom mounted it to the concrete floor. We built a small building for the operator to stand on as he loads and operates the mixer. A hydraulic arm allows the mixer to tilt backward to be unloaded. Into carts. A hay bail loader takes soil bails up to the loading area. Total cost was around $40,000 and the thing is at least 6 cu yards maybe even 8, to me that is just diesel. Hella work to build it tho.

Now packaging the soil is whole different ball game, we never needed to do that, and I'm sure that machine is pricey.

IMO all the pre bagged mixes I've used suck, especially compared to my mix, and need to be amended to be truly effective. I actually just did an experiment with this last run. Compared Basement mix, Canna Bio Terra Plus, Canna Coco , my supersoil, amended Reused super soil, un amended reused supersoil.

1. My supersoil
2. Canna bio terra plus, reused amended supersoil (tied)
3. Canna coco, basement mix, reused un amended supersoil (tied)

The answer, there is no easy way out....

I occasionally work / live at a farm on the mad river right next to the FoxFarm soil mixing headquarters. The douche who owns that place is constantly tring to make up new excuses for why his mixes always suck. Classic Case of a for profit f$ck everyone who supports them type of enterprise. Sadness...

I wish for green pastures ahead and expect there to be a hellish storm on our way to grazing in them.

My source, go out and buy a bag of any one of their mixes and compare it to basement mix, any canna soil or a home-made mix. You will feel like you got robbed when you weigh in your final yield per plant, plus roots soils are harder to keep within my desired parameters. Eg. Drainage, Water holding capacity, pH, and EC. They basically fail all over the board, who designs products that poorly? It makes no sense that a mix designed specifically for cannabis doesn't really work to well to it's intended use. Well at least I'll never tricked by them again.

my buddy purchased a bag of roots organics indoor in Northern California, 530 area.
The only plant he planted with that soil had grass sprouting in it, along with other weeds and he then got gnats. Didn't have any of it before that bag.

Scary shit. I might have to start looking for a new soil if I experience any of this.

we don't talk about it much around here, but an organic container grower needs to own a soil sieve. You can fix a lot just by screening properly.
