I've used a variety of these.

Here are some pros/cons... It diffuses light, eliminating "hotspots" and the need to constantly wipe it off to maintain reflectiveness. Mylar rips easily and creates hotspots, and it's a bitch to clean. Panda plastic (the black/white stuff) is easy to hang, strong enough to be used for walls, and provides good reflection. White paint, obviously is easy to apply, will never tear, and isn't too difficult to clean. Lighttie Diamond is kind of annoying to hang (4 feet wide whereas panda plastic which unfolds to 10 feet wide). Lighttite diffuses the light though, and it's fairly strong, which are two HUGE benefits for me.

My personal preferences are the Lighttite Diamond stuff or flat white paint/white panda plastic. Flat white or diffused light are the way to go.

the true key is to not bounce light off the walls, and concentrate the light to fill the space. However, it's not totally practical in a lot of applications.

ORCA Grow Film™ provides the following unique advantages over traditional reflective foils:

  • 99% Diffuse Surface: Microfiber structure creates even light distribution across material surface regardless of incident angle of light. The resulting isotropic surface luminance eliminates hot spots and does not require surface to be hung flat during installation.
    - Diffuse vs. Specular and Why diffuse reflection matters.
  • Highly Reflective Surface: Measured at 94% reflectivity across the full visible light spectrum. ORCA Grow Film™ is the highest performing reflective surface in the hydroponic industry.
    - Performance comparison
    - What does full visible light spectrum mean and why does it matter?
  • Thermally Reflecting: High infrared reflectance keeps heat where it should be. (More)
  • 100% Light Tight.
  • No Color Shift or Iridesince: Light reflected from surface maintains the original color wavelength so you get the full spectrum from your lamps. (More)
  • Durable, puncture and tear resistance: 11 mil thick
  • Waterproof Washable & cleanable with common household cleaners:
  • Mold and algae growth resistant.
  • UV Protected and Stable: Blocks out harmful UV light with wavelength below 400nm, material does not yellow. (More)
  • Recyclable eco-friendly material containing no halogens, plasticizers or VOCs.
  • Made in Canada
here they compare Orca to most of the other brands of film and theres no comparison !

FLAT paint is the worst possible paint to use for a growroom...

Been painting for the past 20 years sadly as a living, so I know alot about it lol.

There are a few reasons but the main reason is it will mold like a motherfucker. You want a paint with a vapor barrior sheen like a eggshell, semi-gloss or satin finish. These are used primarily in bathrooms and basements or high humidity and traffic areas due to the fact you can wipe them cleam with a wet rag and it dries with no visible effects.

So in the end as a painter I recommend a latex semigloss or satin brilliant white for the
walls and floor of a growroom. It will not mold, cleans up easily and is much more durable than a flat paint.

And cant believe how clueless people are on sheens of paint LOL only 5 votes for semi, eggshell and satin.

Edit to add never use a oil base.... Latex only.... Mildews and molds will feed off the linseed oil. This will cause little black spots to grow wherever water hits and progressively spread in time. Exactly like what you see on the side of your house will be happening in your growroom. Not healthy stuff.

It was found many yrs ago that "ultra" flat white bathroom "mildewcidal" paint gave all our krusty bucket setups that "glow" while easy to clean/wipe down between runs.......

When I went to smaller flip rooms , it was and has always been "reflectix" FTW......bar none......plywood walls AND ceilings with spray adhesive using the 4' rolls in basements with 8'wall heights and bare bulbs hangin......

Simple ....babyshit to install , and lasts forever , or at least 7 yrs at the same locations before shutdown , with the "ultra" flat white paint for 8 yrs before that with awesome results.......

Not arguing with the painter , but trust me.........we tried every paint flavor known to God and man back in the day , including the oil base semi and high gloss with disastrous results from mold forming on EVERYTHING , and the bathroom mildewcidal paint gave the best results with no repercussions from cleaning/bleaching/sterilizing between runs.......

Peace...DHF.......:ying:......

Paint is not the same monster it was 'many' years ago :tiphat: Technology has come a long way. Latex satin with ceramic will give the best reflection and durability. Starwatcher is spot on, the oil based paint you used molded up because of the linseed oils. Like a roach eating the glue in a laminate.

Stay away from high gloss, semi-gloss.

Reflectix is amazing stuff !

Mylar trick

Mylar trick

I have a love/hate relationship with Mylar. Does the job but not very reusable and can tare from time to time.

I like the mirror mylar cause you can tack it easily to closet walls etc.

to avoid tears I always put a layer of tape over the mylar before putting a tack through it..like we did as kid with balloons so you can stick a pin in them without popping..

REAL doors are amazing. I hate panda film zipper doors and all the fuckery that comes with it. I'm using one right now and I can never get it perfect. Hate it.
Friend, You are not Joking here. I absolutely HATE that sticky zipper shit. It totally sucks! Real doors are the BEST!

A friend of mine uses a poly built door, and on top of the rinky dink zipper, hes made about a 1 and a half inch velcro flap... which seems more durable, and light proof than the zipper made for it. :tiphat:
