Can you shorten light rails?

I have a 4ft long tent and went to put my led lights on a light rail inside of it. Problem is light rails generally come in 6ft lengths. You can see the problem this presents right? Can I cut the rail? I dont know, I never owned a rail system before but something tells me I can no problem.

Thanks for stopping by! :bump:

I won't address whether it's worth it to mount your LED light on a light mover. But the rails don't actually come in 6 foot sections. They come in 3 foot sections. And either way, you can easily cut them down with a hack saw. And also easily adjust the range of the mover with thumbscrews. Very easy. Once you see it/set it up you will see.

???

My Light Rail 3.5 came w/ a 6' rail. Either way, like MHM said...it can be cut.

Yours came with a solid, one piece 6' rail? That wouldn't of even fit in the original box/packaging mine came in. Mine came with a "6 ft rail" but it was in two 3 ft sections. I'm having trouble imagining that the company would send out light rails in 3 ft boxes AND 6 ft boxes. That would be an enormous waste of money for them. Maybe they used to do it that way, and then changed it recently? I bought mine last month. They've been around for a long time.

I could of easily just screwed one section into the ceiling and have a 3' light rail. Which is plenty of rail to move across a 4' space. You don't actually need the rail to go all the way from edge to edge. So you don't need to cut it. As I've been selling some used equipment recently to finance some new equipment, I've seen how important it is to retain the resale value of your equipment. It's like cutting holes into your tent and duct taping them up... who wants to buy that when you're done with it?

They come to my shop motor in a box 6'/2m rail loose

Ya all you cats were right. The rail came in two 3.5ft lengths and uses magnets to change the direction of the motor itself. Pretty damn easy. I dont think I even have to cut it, I can work with the 3.5ft length.

AND USE I PLAN ON PUTTING SOME LEDS ON A RAIL. Its really increase their efficiency; plus, I only use them to veg and they work better then any light you could possibly describe to me. (for veg)! :)

Cost 129.00 shipped....gotta love ebay. 300+ at my local hydro store

As milehighmedical mentioned, all of the LR's I've worked with came with the aluminum rail in 2 pieces (half of the quoted total length, with pins to align it).

The only problem with using that Light Rail in your tent setup is balance (is it gonna tip or twist the tent?) and total distance or perimeter dimensions after the lamp has moved to its final end position. Should be common sense and probably just mentioning the obvious, but thought it might be worth a mention.
