600w HPS plus 400w MH or.....1 1000w HPS

a 600 hps and 400mh will give you more points of light and a nice mixed spectrum (better quality buds). a 1000 hps will give you more lumens per watt then the 6 and the 4 because the 4 would be a mh. you will do better with 3 400watt hps's or 2 600watt hps's. It should be pretty easy to pull QP per month doing SOG under 1000 watts. once you get it dialed in you should be able to pull a pound or more per month.

More info would help. factors like room size, ventilation options, budget, etc.

Well, I have a 6" vortech fan so ventilation is covered. And the size can be anything I want, really. Right now I have a 400 watt switchable hps/mh dig ballast. I'm looking to upgrade my setup in a new space. So my thought was to use my 400 and add a 600 (and possibly have dual spectrum) rather than use a 1000 watt hps. I don't really need deep light penetration as I plan on doing a SOG.

I think you got the right idea.

I'm planning on doing the exact same thing. Bought a generic 400w a while ago and now that I'm upgrading to a nice 600w I can use the old one as a supplement.

Just a suggestion, but with extra RL beside the 600w HPS, all the BL and longer lumen maintenance with approximately four times the life of an ordinary MH; you might want to consider a 400w CMH lamp. Between the two, MH can't hold a candle (lol...pun intended) to the CMH.

I personally like the 600w HPS and 400w MH togther (during veg). It gives a much fuller spectrum of light requirement. MH usually burn hotter then HPS but your using more Watts in HPS so at the same height the HEAT intensity is ABOUT the same. Light intensity however is most efficient with a 600w HPS. Seem to be less shocking on the plant when moving to a larger or full HPS setup during flowering.

Below is a pic of my 600w/400w setup. Its perfectally Level on X,Y,Z and Axis! Gives awesome light distribution.

GOOD LUCK MANE! :)

I wonder if just a 400 and 600 HPS would be better. It seems like a lot people are against MH. I think, correct me if I'm wrong, the 600 hps and the 400 hps combined have more lumens than a single 1000 hps. And since I'm not really worried about light penetration......

Does anyone have that lumens/distance chart? I think that would really clear things up for me.

Well a 1000 watt MH with EYE HORTILUX is 80000 and a 600w HPS HORTILUX is 88000 alone. 400w MH is 39000 So Yes more in lumens and you will have better distribution of light with a 2 reflector system. if you use a 1000w HPS it around 124,000 Lumens.

Now consider this aswell when it comes to cost. Lights need to be replaced on average every 20000 hrs, maintaining two bulbs maybe more expensive over a few cycles. If you go with a one light system, consider a light mover.

I had a growzilla with a 600 hps and 400 cmh, loved it, it outperformed the 2 600 hps. Plants loved it, and grew better than the 1200 w of hps
