400w HPS in a 2.7ft cab.......instanity?

another thought.....cool tube with ducting to opposite sides of the bulb and using a fan to pull air from one side to the other (cool tube and bulb in the center), so you are only cooling the bulb not the cab. then cool your cab with another exhaust system. just an idea....
peace n luv n grow safe

air cooling directly on the fan? are you talkin about a cool tube? air conditioning?

I edited my post. I was high. I meant air cooling your BULB not your fan. (duh!)

And if the bulb is mounted right beneath your exhaust fan, that's good. Not gonna get much better than that without doing what Geb'rel suggests.

I'm interested to see how it works out for you. If nothing else, you'll have the hardware to build a slightly larger box if it won't work in this one. a 2x3 space would make very efficient use of a 400w bulb.

i've been doing some reading on CMH bulbs and I think I'm gonna take the plunge. After reading a bit i agree with Anti. The retro white bulbs are the only ones rated for open fixtures. Advanced Lighting has them for $53 and you get a free phillips hps bulb of equal wattage for free! Cant beat that with a bat.

Now the ? is do i go vertical or horizontal? I am only willing to go vertical if it is going to make a large difference. i'm thinking 400w of hid light in a 14 x 28 x 26 cab is gonna fill every inch of space however its mounted........

I ran a 100 watt CMH in my last fridge build and was amazed at how easy it was to cool.

Do you have experience with HPS as well? If so, would you say the CMH is alot cooler to run? or a small to marginal difference?

Edit: I just read your fridge thread and saw you grew out some DP Strawberry Cough. what was the smoke like? They claim its an anti-anxiety kinda high, which my wife needs desperately. I have been reluctant to pop the beans i have after reading that it can be a bit finicky and some report the high is the opposite of calm.

I'd keep that box with CFLs for a veg/mom box and build another box with the Hps for flowering. You could have a nice setup with perpetual yields. Use the cage fan for the Hps and pc fans for the cfl since they produce only a little heat.

Not to be a smart ass, but im way ahead of you there bro, like i stated in the opening post,i'm running a Dr Bud style PERPETUAL SOG...I already have a cfl veg/clone/mom box running 4 x 23w and a crapper fan. It will generate and hold enough clones to send you federal prison for a long time.

Also, as i stated earlier i am not willing to change up my system drastically. It works just fine. This was/is merely playing around since a friend had the HPS in storage and was willing to loan it. In other words if it aint damn near free and almost no effort, i'm happy with where its at. If i can drop $50 on a cmh bulb, remount the fixture and leave everything else alone, I will, but i'm not building another cab anytime soon. I'm a cabinetmaker by trade and dont wanna do it in my spare time unless I'm gettin PAID and I mean PAID. Thanks for checking out my thread anyways.

HPS question: Yes my first grow was with an HPS and I am currently now growing with it second time. The HPS is indeed hotter and when I buy my tent I will be going with a 250 watt CMH set up for sure.

Strawberry Cough question: I read many, many reports about Strawberry cough from dutch passion being crappy and finicky but I gotta tell you I liked it a lot.
Both my grows had rock solid stability, they do like less nutrients then everything else I have grown but I don't view that in a dim light at all.
Its very chill I think your wife would enjoy it, I know mine did(Mine is also very much anti-weed so. lol) so give it a try I say.
Also the chimera grapefruit x Blueberry was popular among my chosen few I give samples to for being relaxing "chill and watch tv smoke".

i am currently running a 400w hps in my closet grow, and i also have the dr bud style perp. sog cab up and running (but with 8 x 23w cfl in each side).

my hps is perfect for the closet, but during its light time i leave the closet door open a bit to help with the temp. i couldn't ever see it going into a small space like these cabs and i wouldn't personally recommend it either, even if you went scrog to keep plants away from bulb, your still playing with tiny plants.

maybe you know something i dont, maybe your cab is different, or maybe you just have a HUGE fan to cool with, but either way, i like the hps in the closet growing a big thick bush of bud, and the cab to grow lots and lots of budsicles!

It's definitely an experiment in overkill... but it sounds like fun to me. He has a 1000 CFM fan so it'll exhaust the room 300 times a minute.

If he tries it and temps stay down it might get some interesting results.

300 times a minute. DAMN, haha.

I'm not sure that will be enuf. The radiant heat isn't so much affected by that air being exchanged. I think you will fry your plants.

I think it is doable though.

You NEED to put a sheet of glass to divide it, right below the light. You need that glass barrier for that small cab. exhaust the top seperate, with your big blower.

i agree with dapurps where he said "i think you will fry your plants" which is quite possible! my cab runs 8 23w cfl's and when i stuck my cloning bucket in the clone side my ak47xwhite rhino clones all fried! not entirly, and now that ive rooted them and put them into flower they are recovering nicely. i just think that your hps will just cook them.

he also meantioned the need for glass to separate the light from your plants and i agree with him here as well. i used foam tape to hold my glass up and it really does keep all that heat up and the veg and flower cabs are soooo much cooler even directly under the bulbs. (an idea i got directly from anti's drbud style cab thread)

I have found that tape's tend to let loose when they are heated up. Use something a little-less-ghetto to hold the glass. If it fall's it's game over.

I agree with you 100% on this point. i build cabinets for a living and have for 15 years. the simplest , trade approved, way of securing a sheet of glass suspended above the floor of a given cabinet is to use 3/4 x 3/4 hardwood strips, otherwise known as cleats, glued and screwed to either side. i would add a third cleat across the back as well. I would also make the cleats 1 x 3/4 allowing enough room to cut a 1/4" x 3/8" dado to slide the glass into producing a 99% airtight seal and a mechanical joint holding the glass at the same time.
