SOG system height question

Yeah I grow in 'ton. My cuts rooted for about 23 days and I put them into 12/12 under a 1k HPS Last Monday and Tuesday (I put a few in to make sure they wouldn't die on me because the light was too close, the cuttings not rooted enough, etc.) and they went crazy on me. The tall ones are already 9 or 10 inches tall. They grew a couple inches by the second day.

Vegging them at all with my setup would've been a giant pain in the ass.

I call veg time, waste of time. For SOG'S that is.

And when you think about it, unless you have just the right ratio of veg area to flower area, vegging for just a week or two is always going to be a pain in the ass with a SOG, because otherwise you're wasting valuable space that could be used for flower.

Say you're vegging for 2 weeks, that means you need enough flower space that you've got somewhere to flower the clones you just vegged for 2 weeks, every 2 weeks. Otherwise you've got down time and you're wasting that space.

You'd need like 4 1ks to justify even 1 400w MH to veg them 2 weeks. Better to set it up so you don't need veg IMO.

I reckon the limit of light penetration for 1000W is about 3' or 90cm for a SOG. People who grow trees tend to hang them vertically and this can get around the problem. One must remember the stretch when put on 12/12. That's why I get a full cola of bud. I also know how my strain behaves very well.

HC, people talk about the penetration of a 1k and I always get confused. In my experience the penetration is much less than the numbers they give. I don't get decent bud much lower than 8 inches or so beneath the canopy. But I train my bushes into a sheet, so it's impossible for strong light to get much deeper than one layer of bud.

I keep thinking that one reason for higher SOG yields might be that you've got a bunch of tall stalks, rather than a sheet like I've got, so light travels down the open spaces between the stalks. Basically, you can allow penetration because the gaps don't close until lower down where the bottom of the stalks grow together, so the upper parts are separated and you're taking better advantage of your light? Does that make any sense?

Basically a SOG done right has a lot more surface area exposed to light?

I agree. I can get 1g per watt growing SOG style. The colas are covered in bud from top to bottom. There is light getting down to the bottom of each cola. The disadvantage is high plant numbers. That is why people do SCROG'S.

You get 1g a watt from SOG, but what do you get if you grow bushes? See what I'm asking? I have no way of knowing what kinds of yields you would get if you grew bushes and trained them into a sheet like I described above. I'm wondering how much my yields might improve using a SOG. I get about .6 g/w with bushes trained into sheets.

I guess I'll find out in 7 weeks, lol. Just curious.

Also, what footprint/canopy area do you use for your lights? 4'x4' for a 1k or do you go bigger? 3'x3' for a 600?

I'm not sure about bushes, I only do SOG'S. I have a 1000W HPS over a 3x3 ebb/flow table and put 36 clones in it. I used to use a 600W HPS but found the yield was higher with the 1000W HPS.

Wow, a g/w is awesome with only a 3'x3' footprint HC. You could probably get a substantially higher ratio if you went to 4'x4'.

If I get 1g/w out of mine I'm going to shit.

I get 36 single colas like this. Top to bottom bud.

HC, that is one nasty cornstalk brother. :)

Kava thanks, I'll take a look. It can be hard to find good SOGs to check out.

I plant to make a new setup from:

old box 50cmx50cmx80cm (1,6´x1,6¨x2,6´)
250 hps in cool tube, cooled by 100 m3/h bathroom vent
Pots filled with coco (12x12x12)

I plant to put 16 clones(indica) directly to 12/12.

With this setup I have about 55 cm (1,8´) of growing space.

Will it be enough space?
