1000 watt super sun 2 vs. 1000 watt magnum XXXL

So I am in the process of updating the room and want to pick up some new reflectors and have been reading numerous threads. So it looks like the two best 1000 watt reflectors are the super sun 2 and the magnum XXXL. Does anyone have first hand experience as to why one should chose one over the other? The super sun 2s are cheaper and have a smaller light foot print (3x3) and the magnum XXXL are more expensive and have a larger foot print (up to 5x5). Now I am going to be using a bigger area and going to spread out the light a little more, so I am thinking about going with the XXXLs, but wanted to get other opinions before I drop the coin. Another question if I go with the XXXLs should I pay the extra price for the 8 inch. ducting holes vs. the 6 inch holes? The 8 inch is about $50.00 more a light.

I recently switched from the SS2 to the Magnum 6" and the light foot print between the two doesn't even compare. The Magnum covers a lot of area. My area is 10x5 and the two Magnums I use (with 1000 watters) covers every inch. With the SS2' I had shadows at every corner.
I love my Magnum hoods and kick myself for not getting them sooner.

I have a 1.2m square tent and ended up getting the block buster 1000w. Its supposed to be a perfect spread for 1.2m, if i'd of been in a bigger space i would of bought the magnum though. They're about the same price, and great quality too.

Odium33 you would go with the super sun 2s, have you tested the XXXLs? They will definitely be bigger, but with that comes a bigger light foot print, thats why I was considering them? still unsure though

ya I have two supersun 2's , 2 magnum xxxls, 6-7 cool suns, some vertical parabolics (which are awesome for non-aircooled) and 2 8" cooltubes with the wing deal. when hung at a reasonable height, they all produce about the same footprint, or at least big enough for my purposes. the supersun 2s are alot cheaper, smaller and the seal is much better for my co2.

The thing I like about magnums or any of the supersized hoods coming out these days is the evenness of light spread the hot spot is so minimal that you can just about drop the hoods onto the canopy without any burn. And I run mine without air cooling. I've run supersuns also and felt the hot spot was a significant factor when bringing the hood down to the canopy for max light saturation.
pico has an excellent thread hanging around where he tests all the current hoods on the market. magnum xxxl beat out the supersun2.

My 2 Ochos cover every inch of a 6 x 9 ft area grown inside a 10 x 12 ft room . But I bet I could still grow trees in the corners as well . There's no wasted light with the XXXL's . They're slightly larger than the XXl's too, it's not just the diameter of the intake and exhaust thats increased BTW . I also have a Blockbuster as well and it rocks my 4.5 x 4.5 ft veg. tent <- really nicely made hood .

I have to respectfully disagree with you odium33. Given the same wattage and measured at the same height, the Magnum puts out a wider foot print. My SS2's foot print was more concentrated and narrow, plants in the middle easily got light bleached.
My Magnums, MUCH wider foot print, but less intense over all. No light bleaching at all.
But yeah, they are big an clunky. Real big!

It really depends on the application i have found that for a 4x4 or smaller i like the Super Suns they cover this area well from 18-24 inches above the canopy and have considerably better penetration than the oversized reflectors. However any larger and they start to diminish quickly. The Magnums cover a 4x4 great but are a little lacking in penetration, however they really shine right around a 5x5. I usually grow with a 1 plant per sqaure foot scrog and both reflectors get about the same yield. With the magnums i keep it close to the canopy (12-16 inches) and try to keep the buds no more than 8-10 in above the screen. With SSII i keep it about (18-21 inches) and let the buds grow 14 inches or more above the screen. Like i said they yield about the same. Oh also this is with a 1000w hps.

Right on SativaHybrid, thanks for the info my man! Right now I am actually leaning toward the Blockbusters, they seem to have a nice 4x4 footprint. I started this thread a while ago when I was still contemplating the ss2s. I started another thread not too long ago asking about Blockbusters.

I would use the xxxl's only with a 1000w bulb, but probably not over 4x4 trays. for 4x4's. I would use the ss2.

The ss2s are the perfect hood for 600w bulbs over 3x3 trays, but not as perfect for anything else

Just my two cents...
