The plants I'm working with when flowered early are medium density indicas with a good sized main cola and plenty of bud sites along it, what table for 2x400w? Also, am I cutting off any lower branches in the early stage of flower to limit its side reaching abilities?

a 400 is good for 2x2 or 3x3

Yes, you should be able to do a couple 2x2 areas with two 400w lights.

training your plant by cutting off the side branches is a common technique, but depend on how tall and how bush you want them to finish and also what strain you are growing. Some strains take better to training than others.

It might take you a few runs to figure out the best shape and amount of training for your plants.
