how long do you hold in smoke?

with bong rips i just inhale to the bottom of my lungs and exhale. no holding. all the thc is pretty much absorbed instantly, according to how lungs work. the extra buzz you get from holding a hit is oxygen deprivation. the only thing you really get is more tar sticking in your lungs

awesome responces.
when i vaped i would do at east 30 seconds, sometimes over 1 minute. if i didn't hold it in really long, i wouldnt get very high.
i think im going to try the just a few seconds from here on out:tiphat:

When you vape you can hold the hit as long as you want IMO, however the temp at which your vaping would also factor into it.

When I say I hold 4-6 seconds thats for straight smoke from a metal pipe, not a delicious vape hit of goodness :dance013:

HOLD THAT VAPOR!:thank you:

I think a good point to make also is that when you take a nice big bong rip like that alot of the smoke is in your lungs much longer due to how long it takes to get all the smoke. So lets say you snap a bowl, alot of that smoke got into your lungs before you even finished burning it(Depending on the piece you use).

As for the oxygen thing again, how do you know it makes you feel higher? I meen I hold my breath till I am blue in the face and just feel out of breath or flush, I dont feel "high" however I could see some smokers putting that on the weed "OMG THAT BOLW KNOCKED ME ON MY ASS" or you stopped breathing bro.

Haha sorry if these posts are nuts im fucking stoned

this is how it's supposed to be, holding supposedly makes little difference
the reason being that the bulk of absorption happens with the motion over the lung's alveoli
relatively little is absorbed when the lungs are still
not sure if this is fact, but it sounded pretty credible

yeah, that was an interesting read, made sense to me too after mulling it over
i believe smoke/vapor is an aerosol, minute particles suspended in air, if they don't touch the lung surface, no way to be absorbed
i'd imagine there is circulation/absorption with holding, just much less

About the coughing thing, I remember reading somewhere that when a free-diver dives deep underwater the pressure compresses their lungs causing remaining oxygen to be absorbed. This can cause a diver to remain under longer than they should because when they come back up there's no o2 left...but anyway, when you cough the pressure in your lungs increases until the smoke and air is forced out your throat. Maybe this small period of increased pressure combined with rapid motion could cause increased thc absorption.

I would say it was just from an oxygen deprivation buzz but the first time I hit a bong I coughed out a huge hit and coughed for so long I thought I was gonna pass out. Then an hour later I puked and then maybe 15 minutes later I fuckin flat out hallucinated. :D

I used to inhale, count to ten, exhale.
Then I found:

Response to marijuana as a function of potency and breathhold duration
James P. Zacny and L.D. Chait
http://www.springerlink.com/content/p9770h7r77534377/
In conclusion, our results indicate that marijuana in-
toxication is not potentiated by prolonged breathholding
of smoke in the lungs. So, then, why do marijuana smok-
ers commonly hold the smoke in their lungs for pro-
longed periods of time? Perhaps breathhold duration
can affect subjective response to marijuana in the natural
environment in conjunction with some other smoking
topography parameter (such as depth or rate of inhala-
tion) which was not controlled for in our laboratory
procedure, On the other hand, it is possible that pro-
longed breathholding of marijuana smoke is largely a
superstitious behavior, an exaggerated "ritual" passed
on from user to user. Yet another possibility was sug-
gested by one of our subjects during the debriefing
session: that breathholding reduced the sensation of
harshness in the throat as the smoke was being exhaled.
A definitive answer to this question will require further
research. Our results do suggest, though, that marijuana
smokers could achieve the same level of intoxication
while lowering their exposure to CO (and possibly other
toxic smoke constituents) simply by modifying a single
aspect of their smoking behavior.

If no heroic hits are involved, I hold it for no more than 10 seconds.

In my older days I was know to hold it so long that it would become a:

Ghost hit !

Never saw any advantage but to impress newbies with pussy lungs... LOL

So yeah, max 10 secs and you are in Lala Land.

When I first started smoking I was told you need to hold it in as long as you can because the longer you did the higher you would get. So I did that for a while but eventually gave it up because I got tired of worrying about how long I was holding hits in. So I just relaxed about it, held hits in as long as I felt necessary (which was about 5 seconds) and I never noticed a difference.

Same here, except I just forgot to hold it in after a while. Someone mention ghost hits... man I wonder if weed was legal if we would have all this high school level stupid misinformation still. I don't hold hits in very long anymore and I sometimes still get dirty looks from people I smoke with for it.

Way, way back I used to smoke a bowl in my room as a teen. I would light up a cig and take hits off the bowl, holding it in til no more smoke came out and exhale through a cloud of cig smoke. Not too great for the lungs though.

35 years later...........now I vape and hold it in for a just few seconds.

Ion transfer at the molecular level is almost instantaneous. You don't need to hold in a toke for more than a second. Holding in your toke deprives you of oxygen and makes you cough and that's why everyone thinks they are getting higher.

Five seconds for me.
I had read of a study that said holding it in was unnecessary. Tried doing the one second tokes for awhile but it just didn't seem right and I didn't seem to get as high. I guess I need the O2 deprivation (and/or find better smoke!).
