A question about the cold...

Hello, this is my first-ever post on ICMag. I've been lurking for a while now, and I've come across a question.

I have a small trash can grow (one plant growing hydroponically inside a trash can with floro tubes surrounding the plant), but I've come to worry about the plant. It is currently essentially in an outside area, and the temperature is dropping.

My question would be: Could I use a fish tank heater in the water to bring up the temperature to something more desirable without hurting the roots? I figure if the water is a more appropriate temperature, it will warm up the trashcan, and the plant/buds will be at a more comfortable temperature as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

To many variables, not enough information.

It don't matter how warm the water is if the plant is frozen..

You'll need to provide more and more accurate info and probably pictures before anyone will be able to give you accurate advice.

If you can't them I can help. Sure it will work.

I dont see a good future for that plant. She is pretty much dead. Look at the roots my guess they may be brown and slimy. Move the trash can inside and switch to promix or coco. Once the water hits 70 or above you will get root rot a water chiller is generally needed for dwc style grows.

I know the plant looks to be in poor health, and I think thats because I waited a week too long to change the res. Still, I think the cold might be hurting it further. Perhaps this should really be moved to the infirmary. Any help would be gladly appreciated though.

That did not happen in one week bro !! I think you have multiple problems to sort out not only temps.

Hmm, perhaps for now I'll just try to take whatever clones I can and scrap the rest. On to round 2.

I checked on the roots, and they are all sorts of grimy. In fact, the res has bubbles in it.
More than likely, I was insufficient in cleaning the res after changing the water, and now that plant is virtually dead.
At times like these, I'm reminded how forgiving soil can be, but hydro just has too many advantages to me. Ah well, back to the drawing board.

Cant be just your dirty res.. People I know grow DWC a whole grow with out ever changing out their res. What kind of medium are you using ? Hydroton? What are the temps of your water? Is your reservoir light proof? PH ? PPM?
Oh yeah that plant is dead !

If you would like to save it.. Go ahead and pull it and clean off the roots with tap water.. Throw it in a very night hydrogen peroxide/water mix.. Like a drop a cup. Let it sit for 24 hours.. Trim all the dead leaves off. Rinse the roots again and transplant it in a nice soil mix. Then leave that lady alone and give her regular ppm/ph nutes for her size as normal. Two to three weeks she should be coming right back to life. As far as replanting her in water(hydro) I would not suggest it. Clean everything like you could eat out of it.. and start fresh. If you do not you will continue to have these problems as that plant is beyond help that way. Take care

DWC in a nutshell

Use bleach in the res. 1-2ml/gal added every other day. That takes care of rot issues..

Keep pH at 5.2 - 5.8 (never exceed 6.5)

Use MaxiGro for veg. MaxiBloom for flowering. No need for mixing different bottles of expensive shit that won't give you better results than Maxi.

Maxi grows:

Add CalMag at 10ml/gal (calmag is the most expensive thing in my garden) every res change.

Change res at least every 2 weeks.

Air temp should be 70-80F.

Water temp 65-70F (high temp might not be an issue with bleach? can anyone validate this?)

That's pretty much dwc hydro
