Start seeds in 1 gal. pot of soil?

I have been starting germed seeds in 18 oz. cups for 2 weeks, then transplant into 1 gal. pot for further veg, and maybe go into 2 gal for flower or leave it in 1 gal.

I want to simplify this stuff and would like to hear of those that start their seeds in the final pot or half the size of the final pot.

I have heard of the roots doing better with many up pots, but as I said, I want this as easy as I can. If you have done both and can give a comparison it will be good.:thank you:

well, i think you're doing it right yesum, putting small plants in big pots can lead to them being waterlogged because the plants cant use the water fast enough before the soil dries out.mj likes a wet, /dry cycle, and that's better achieved with smaller pots.

I just started putting my cuts directly into one gallon pots with a clear cup over them. My experience has taught me that the less handling of the plant, the better. I don't understand why anyone would pop seeds in a paper towel and then transfer them. I mean, you're handling a very tender root. Why not just let it pop in the pot it's going to live in? I've had a MUCH better result with putting them straight into the pot. That being said, you don't want to get root bound. How long are you going to veg?

i put them in paper towels for one day just to pop then put them to a half gal bag for 3 weeks then they go into two gals for 45 to 60 days then to 5-7 gal bags and it works great and have had very few problems with good seed.

What is the reason for the paper towel? It makes no sense. It's just something that someone did and told everyone and now everyone does it. I don't get it.

The paper towel method works quite well!!! The bag is to raise humidity! Put in a warm place,,,,When germinated like this,,, most seeds pop in less then 24 hrs. for me! I highly recommend this method to everyone! as soon as you see that little white root put in soil as normal!

It's just not necessary. If you like more work, go ahead but I still say the less handling, the better when it comes to roots.

if possible start em in as large as pot as you'll use, once you see roots they are good to go into your final pot size
this reduces transplant shock from multiple transplants and is less work for you, and your girls will grow fastest if started in larger pots

plant directly into the same container you are going to flower in.
no fuss no muss, just as nature intended...or close enough.

That would work fine if you had 100% success rate and the room. I don't see a problem with 1 gallon for veg and transfer them to 5 when you go to flower. I grow mostly sativas and this works good for me.

it is less stress to stay in one pot, plus ever notice how the larger the pot the larger the end girls is.
Go to biggest pot first if you can have the space.

easiest way to get 100% success rate or dam close

I use a paper towel to get a tap root for a few reason. The biggest being not wasting time and space on duds. I pop bagseeds for now and they dont all pop.

Look into low stress transplanting. its not any more stressful then taking the plant out the pot to look at the roots.

I prefer to pot up a few times but you can easily start in 1 gallons. I did my first grow.

if you don't have the room why would you be doing seedlings? use clones then.
success getting clones to maturity beats seeds everytime.
I've had seeds germed nicely and died in the transfer to soil, so there is no such thing as 100%. even with clones...but do what you're good at; it'll make you feel all warm and fuzzy.

Clones are nice if they are available to you, everyone is not so lucky and must start with seeds at least in the beginning. The paper towel method seems like to much work to me. I just stick the seeds point up in soil and wait. Works great for me.

Thanks for all the responses. I will go right into the 1 gal., and then the females into 2 gal. for flower if I have room.

About the paper towel thing, yea it is more work and potential problems I guess. I went into soil without germinating them last grow. I wound up digging the seeds up if they were a little over the time limit in my mind. I also had a dud and it would have been better to deal with it in a towel. I am like a kid at Xmas getting into the presents.

Moist paper towel in small plastic bowl with plastic wrap on top. Place seeds onto paper towel drain excess water first, cover with plastic wrap, leave a small space for air to escape, put into a warm lit area and wait til u c roots then plant. Just that easy takes 1-4 days. peace and overgrow the world.

I just put the seeds in a moist paper towel, then into a ziplock bag that I blow into and on top of my cable box(there are vents on top that release heat).
