I was looking at presents for my nephew and someone suggested getting him an xbox 360. I looked and they are 199.00 for the console and a controller. What else is needed for this system to work? Do you also have to buy games? And what is the xbox live thing I saw that was 50 dollars? I know nothing about any of this stuff. I did see it says they are wireless so I assume you can connect to the net through a router?

what a nice uncle!

the $200 system should come with a game or two. there are holiday bundles that come with 3-4 games, may be $100 more....

xbox live is where its at. xbox 360 is cool, but without live, your losing out on tons of the best features. playing against friends, netflix, download demos and games......

if you do get the xbox live, xbox points are needed to download games and features. i buy the points off ebay for best prices...

+1 on the nice uncle, damn! I wish you were my uncle! lol

Yes JJ, he would need/want 'LIVE' as well @ ~50 bucks/yr. subscription. (Tip for his parents, DON'T enter a CC#, buy the prepaid card at the store, as it's seriously impossible to get Microsoft to remove a CC# once entered, trust me on this one)

Really want to blow him outta the water? Have mom/dad (or you) purchase 'Call of Duty: Black Ops' to go with the 360, chances are that's the game he's been eyeballing anyway (it's the #1 game right now, everybody at his school is playing it.)

I just bought the Kinect unit, some wireless headphones and I got a deal on a yearly for 29 bux :woohoo:

Go with the LIVE! version for sure

There are deals to be had all over JJ.

I personally like eBay, but it's gonna be tight for delivery now.

If you're feeling real generous, throw in this wireless headset

So what your saying is I have to buy the xbox and then buy the xbox live seperately?

And then after that you have to buy points to be able to play games online?

Xbox live lets you connect to internet. From there you can play any game online and download demos for free.

Xbox points is the currency. They have arcade games that you can buy online. They are not full on retail games, but more like mini games and revamped old school games. They only cost about 7-10 dollars worth of "points" They are actually very fun and addicting. Also with "points" you can buy addon multiplayer maps, and additional game content for retail games.

Trials HD, ShadowComplex, Toy Soldiers, Metal Slug and Worms Armegeddon are a few of the good arcade games. Check em out on youtube. Trials HD had alot of videos, fun and frustrating at the same time...

Yea xbox live is like phone service, they'll sell cards that come in 1 month of xbox live for like $10 bucks, 3 months for 25$ and a year for $50. When u get a new xbox it'll come with 1 month of free xbox live. So u could just get him an xbox he'll be able to play xbox live for a month and decide if its somethin he's interested in continuing.

Hope i helped
Diz

Edit - you will either need to plug the xbox directly into the thing that you'd connect your computer to to get internet (will come with the xbox, but will only reach 6ft so a bigger one might be needed, or u can purchase a wireless system that hooks up wirelessly to your router.. but there pretty pricey.

Oh and u definantly need to get him Grand Theft Auto IV... he will have countless hours of fun killing hooker, stealing cars, and running over pedestrians. U will go down as the greatest uncle in history!

id talk to his parents.

you can get the system with controller and possibly game/s for 200

he doesnt need live or points to play. live will allow him to play online and its a subscription based thing. the points are to download games and add-on packages for games.

if i were you id get him the system and see if his parents will buy him games and an xbox live subscription as all he really needs to get started is the console, controller and games. live is just the icing on the cake

EDIT: shoulda read the rest of the thread. already been said

PS3 all the way... free online, better games, and a bluray player.

How old is your nephew JJ? Older kids/teenagers and hardcore gamers would probably like a ps3 more. Younger and I'd say a xbox or wii.

Correct, but as somebody pointed out - every new xbox comes with a free month of 'LIVE'. He'll be able to play any games you buy him regardless, but just not online with his friends until he signs up for LIVE. LIVE = online playing /w friends.

And then after that you have to buy points to be able to play games online?

Like somebody else said, points = add-on packs/smaller arcade games/etc., not necessary at initial purchase at all.

As far as PS3 vs. 360; I agree on the age generalizations - ask the kid though!

Exactly. My comment wasn't aimed at turning the entire tide of the thread into PS3vsXBOX, BUT you CAN avoid all of these extra fees/hassles with simply gifting him a PS3.
With that said, what a child wants and kinda expects for Christmas is what will make him happiest. If you get a chance to shoot a few words with him beforehand, I'd have a lil PS3vsXBOX debate with him personally, and see if he'd be willing to accept the better:whistling: choice of the two.
Simply put, If he has no decisive reasoning behind wanting an XBOX over a PS3.. the upkeep/fees(for the xbox), for the parents in his case, isn't worth the trouble.

you dont have to get him live as he gets a free trial with the console for a month(so he can see if he likes it). Get him one, you'll be the best uncle out!
