well this post is just a reminder to calibrate you ph and tds meters often.

recently my ph meter stopped working properly and wouldnt calibrate a 2 point calibration. i hadnt cleaned the electrode in a while(was out of cleaning solution), so i got some cleaning solution and with advice from members here they told me to use a toothbrush and the cleaning solution.....and now it works fine, i did a 2 point calibration, works perfect.

when i was at the store i decided to pick up some tds meter calibration solution as well(1382ppm), when i got home i took a glass of tap water as a "guidline" so i would know how out of whack my meter was. tap water before calibration was 163ppm...i then calibrated the meter twice to make sure it was properly calibrated. after calibration my meter was showing the tap water to be 240ppm.

now im 100% sure my ph and tds meters being out of whack contributed to a lower yield and multiple problems over the course of my last grow. i had not calibrated my tds meter in about 3-4 weeks and i had not properly cleaned my ph elecrode in about 2 months...

this just goes to show you that calibration abd cleaning of both meters on a weekly basis is very important, i thaught i would be good if i did it every 2-4 weeks, but i now know better.

about right

about right

yep about right there mate .hanna,s tds calibration solution is 1.288
for mine worth making sure people have the right one for the right model i know hanna have 2 diff ones for different models.
I was out 1.4 after fitting new batterys if i hadnt had the solution .

With hanna ph i remove the probe for cleaning with the tool provided
Cheap ph meters are not cheap in the long term.
If you cant replace the probe dont buy the meter.A

yeah i can replace the probe, and the meter wasnt cheap(150), but the probe was 85 + tax....so i thaught id give a good cleaning first.....changing probe was last option....

just thaught id say what model numbers i got

hanna ph hi98127

hanna tds/ec hi98311

Joe, be really careful with that - I had the same problem when I took my pH meter (Hanna something or other, not sure of the exact model) out of a two month hibernation - was getting pH readings of 15 and 16 (mythical pH), so I recalibrated with 4.01 and 7.01 until it matched.

Thought it was fine, but when I double checked with another meter a few days later it was off by .8 (in three days).

Just a heads up.

Well Bob i calibrate if it doesnt read 7 on a quick dip in ph 7 buffer.Ive got to know when it needs cleaning it gets a little slow.
I have ph indicator fluid for quick test also .
Yes i hear you there.A

had this same problem...my meter was off by a good point and i was watering my hydro crops with 6.5 instead of 5.5...

now i keep my meter in calibration solution in a shotglass 24/7. when i first fire her up i let her start in the 7,0 solution so i know if shes out of whack or not. sometimes shes off by .1 but its all good....

Use storage solution or PH4 buffer in a pinch you can white vinegar (PH 4.3 or thereabouts) but do not use PH7 buffer and do NOT under any circumstances use RO water as a storage solution. never store your PH electrode dry
