Strain selections for tropical East coast QLD

Hi everyone. I live in tropical East coast Qeensland. I'm an outdoor grower. I have been growing for about 10 years and am looking for some advise selecting the perfect strain for my location. Have grown many strains in a variety of locations over the years. Have grown Jock horror, Arjan's Haze #1, white widiow, trainwreck, Hawaiian Maui Waui, full moon, chronic and alot of other local sativa strains. I'm currently growing in a swampy area with high humidity. Last year had alot of problem with bud mold and powerdery mildew which was something i had never come across before. This Summer/Autumn we are expected to get alot more rain and humidity than usual with the La Nina effect in a medium to strong event. This time last year we went 200 days without rain and this year we ahve recorded record rain. In spring we have received already in excess of 300mm. We've had another 200mm just this weekend. I would expect we will receive another 700mm of rain before the season is out. The strain i'm looking for will need to grow really big like trees instead of plants, tight heavy buds with huge yields, mold and mildew resistant, caterpilla resistant, higher the potency the better, and be sturdy enough to handle strong winds and wet weather. Soil will be hand made with perfect ph, organics and drainage in 120-200L smart pots. Will also be getting a patch going with good old turkey's nest, organic life & dolomite lime, mixed in holes in sandy country. There are just too many strains out there for me to try and work out what is best. I've got some female chronic, Hawaii x Maui Waui & full moon beens ready to sprout now, but was thinking if i could find something better it may not be too late to order and get sprouted in time. Does anyone grow in similar conditions and have nailed the strain selection down to a fine art? Please help....

It sounds like you were on the right track with those strains you have been growing. Being in the the tropics would suggest a sativa be appropriate but there are so many out there. Maybe someone from FNQ ( far north Queensland ) can help. I used to live and work in Tully, FNQ, the wettest place in Australia but I wasn't growing anything at the time. Contending with high rainfall and humidity in the wet season is the issue I guess. Sorry, can't really help much.

Thanks high country. I tend to like the HxMW. Some old locals from here got a cutting of what they believed to have been the original maui waui about 15-20 years ago from Melbourne. They kept it going for about 5 years with a grow room and made many cuttings from it. Everyone said that it was the best strain for our conditions that they had ever seen. The rumour was that one particular grower was able to get 20+ pounds off the one plant by training and bending(the story was actually 32 pound and you could park a landcruiser ute behind it and it would dissapear. I guess you's have o see it to believe it) I spoke to someone who saw the trunk and the said it was 8 inches across a the base. Unfortunately you can't get this strain anywhere any more, so i'm trying the HxMW instead. Full moon seems to go pretty good, a bit stronger in THC but unforunately thai varieties have a higher than normal % chance of terning hermie. Not what i need when doing cuttings....

Hi crazy shovel. Can't go wrong with the HxMW. Have you tried PNG? It goes well with high rainfall. Myself, like the name suggests - I love my ducksfoot. Monster cropped some last year. HUGE. Good luck mate.

yeah growsmall. the mulla is awesome. guess being the genetics it has it should go well in the tropics, but i don't believe i have come across it up here. i'd like to know where i could find it though! i'm not into the online trade thing. haven't seen the real thing for near on 15 years, but it's not something to ever forget!

Im in NQ as well mate and if like me you just experienced around 700mm of rain over the last 4 -5 weeks. The only strain so far that has been totally mould free for me in these conditions has been sams OH x SK. I believe there are some pics in my galleries some where. Feel free to PM if you want some more info.

Hey crazy ,, whilst i already have a bunch planted , im not sure how they will go given the season you k now we are already having ,, sooo ,, ill be planting some late feb aswell , raise them in a greenhouse and put them out in march to take advantage of a hopeful end to the wet season ...
i figure if it started a bit early it may finish when its sposed to at the end of march ,, man the plant s that ripen in the sun then will be fantastic ...
not putting all my eggs in one basket this y ear ,, dont think we can afford too ...

on strain types ,, id go for longer flowering strains , they tend to handle the wet conditions better and should flower in accordance with the end of the monsoon ...
i have pure sativas in at the moment ,, man i love the look of them ,, such elegant leaf structure ,,, i might try some faster strains in feb aswell as more sativas ...

Yeah the PNG might be a little hard to get a hold of, the real deal that is, unless you know someone... As for the ducksfoot - shouldn't be that hard to come across in NQ. It's a huge webbed leaf, mostly sativa, plant which I believe comes from a tropical environment. Very similar to Strawberry Web (an Hawiian Strain) but apparently one of Australias 'own' strains. Check out Wally Duck Seeds in the Breeders list of IC, or google it. I have seen several crosses made with it that also retain the webbed leaf structure, the most notable being DFx(TimewarpxKorean Big skunk). Very stealth!:tiphat:

I believe that it is still around, but you may have to go to northern NSW to find it. I've often wondered how it would go in NQ. It is some of the trippiest bud ever!:dance013:I love these little icons :smokey:

:tree:I think Marley's Collie, or Neville's Haze would be best suited in those conditions. I live in the sub-tropics, and those strains are good outdoors in my environment.

Hi donald, can't pm you yet, but no, I was gifted them from a good friend in 2004. He tried them indoor without much success. I first came across them in 1995(?) from a NQ lad who took them to the subtropics and had them outdoors. I fell in love with the strain then and swore that if i ever came across it again, then i would save it. When i can work out how to post some pics of the current lot, I shall post them. It's great to get a reply from you. You the man!:thank you:
