Kind of Paint to Use on Seeds

I was wondering if anyone knew the kind of paint Green House seeds uses to color it seeds. I have tons of seeds that I would like too save for years to come and I think the best way would be to color code them. I would do this by hand. Does anyone know what kind of paint they use or paint that would not harm the seeds for long term storage? Also what they use to code them for storage? :thank you:

Would latex paint damage the seeds over time? Would be a great way to identify the seeds in many years time.

@junior_grower I was pretty sure they said they use paint.

they don't use paint. It's some kinda mix they created that has some minor nutrients and dissolves in water. There's a youtube video with franco explaining/showing the machine that does it.

edit: I agree with Pure ^^ I try to use paper envelopes instead of plastic bags though..allows any condensation/moisture to "breath" out

I think labels and bags is easier then painting your seeds, don't you?

Ya I am sure you're right, I was just interested in what kind of paint they use.

Watched the video I thought they did two coats, one with the nutrients and storage coating and one with the paint, because they had to let it dry.

its done in a commercial candy machine would be my guess you tumble the seeds and build up a starch and sugar and wax coating with what ever other things you want in there like making a jelly bean coating .paint it is not ,neither latex or oil .they would damage the seed and latex would germinate the seed or false start it while it dryed and oil base would make it impossible for the seed to germinate if it survived the paint contents

yeh i just watched it again too...it looked like there was a first coat of nutrients, followed by a second coat of colored powder to identify them. Maybe you could research into other fields like candy making...there's probably some candy or nut or something that is coated by hand in a similar process.

I think though for long term storage their coating wouldn't hold up..it isn't like a sealcoat, it's just some nutrition and identification ...IMHO if the coating was actually strong enough to protect them for long term storage then it would also be too thick and would hinder the seed's germination...and needless to say after long term storage you wouldn't want anything hindering a seed's ability to sprout.

I think if it's just for I.D. purposes a tiny dot of colored fingernail polish would be ok if it was on the side of the seed and not sealing the "seam" of the seed. I don't guarantee that the chemicals in nail polish wouldn't affect the seed in some negative way though :)
