Best Reverse Osmosis (RO) system to buy?

I am looking into adding an Reverse Osmosis (RO) system and wondering what is the best to buy for the money? I was reading up on some specs and some say you can only get 11 gallons of RO water per day? That isn't very much, how do you fill up a 50 gallon res then?

I think for the money roughly $500 the Merlin is your best all round buy.It should give you an easy 100 or more gallons per day.Depends on your water pressure also.If you are on city water as compared to well water then you will have enuff pressure. But with a well pump then adding a booster pump to the RO will give you lots of water.
btw RO water systems in the $100/$200 also work very good. There are many brands available so shop wisely.I bought one about 5 yrs ago .It has a booster pump,UV addition, and a few other gadgets.($700) I am on a well system and can easily get 200 gallons /day when needed.Never had a problem to date except for the regular filter change which is relativley inexpensive.
good luck.Check Ebay as they have the best assortment and price.

The Merlin is really impressive with how fast it spits out water, but be ready to spend a fortune on replacement filters. Every year I would have to spend enough money on filters that I could have just bought a new, 100gpd system on ebay. This was with a 400w cabinet setup and drinking water only.

I'm also curious what others suggest since my latest "smart reef" brand has issues with auto topping. It seems to want to continue running waist water after my res tops off.

I've been using the same Aqua Safe 5 stage 100 GPD system (Ebay) for over 7 years. Only replaced the membrane once and the other filters 5 times (bought a case of 5 replacement filters when I bought the system). Water never gets over 15 ppm even with very dirty filters. I highly recommend!

wattspremier.com They specialize in water filtration systems. I like the RO5. It's modular, has a couple upgrades available, and is repairable. They offer a 10gal tank add-on.

I have mine installed in the garage under a utility sink.

Stealth RO 100/200 work well. 100-200 gallons a day depending on the unit purchased.the booster pump accessory gives you the pressure needed to run the unit efficiently, plus it senses pressure build up in the line and will shut off water supply to the RO unit, thus stopping water from draining to waste after a rez is filled and float valve triggered. without the booster pump the unit will keep draining to waste after a float valve is triggered.

Thanks for the info guys! I'm going to check out those systems for sure. Just wondering how much does it cost to replace the Merlins 3 filters?

i got the 150gpd model with a float switch and shipping for like $110. it does not put out 150 gpd but it could be my water pressure so that may be a issue with any brand.

anyways it's 6 stage and i've been running two for a year and both are still spitting out water under 20ppm coming from a tap that's 300ppm. when i first set it up a year ago it was spitting out 0ppm so maybe once a year i should replace the membrane but i'll probably wait another year. replacement's are cheap to. i did a review of this unit on another site i was so impressed with the results considering it's like 1/4 the price of the other units.

oh yeah i have it setup on a 50 gal drum and i run a 50 gal res with 30 ebb and grow pots. in full bloom i'm using 50 gal of water easy with my whole operation. on top of the ebb and grow i have multiple soiless/coco plants, 10 mothers and a 50 site aero cloner that holds about 20 gal of water with just one of these so this thing get's a ton of use. the other i ordered for a friend who has a identical setup and he's having no issues with this either.

hi, louie!

most people looking into ro filters for the first time see the ones sold at lowes or hd's for installation under the sink in the kitchen.

it will have a faucet and a volume tank. this is not what you want for your plants. these types have relatively high flow characteristics and are expensive for what they produce.

you don't need high flow to fill a drum with a float valve on it, you just need steady.

i have a $100 inline 35 gpd ro filter designed for aquariums hooked up to a drum as in the above. it produces enough water to maintain 16 large plants, 4 people, one dog, and a cat. we use it for cooking and drinking.

the easiest place to hook one of these types up is in the washing machine area if you have one.

you just have to put a "y" fitting on the cold water line to your washing machine split off to your ro filter and the drain water can go down the same drain the machine uses.

output line to the drum for accumulation. http://www.marinedepot.com/reverse-osmosis-deionization__index-ap.html is one good place to look.

im using the evolution 1000 (1000GPD) still takes about an hr to fill up a 55 gal res, also worth noting i saw one in another growshop for a few hundred more that only has a 1:1 waste ratio

Hey, I'd be really interested to know the name of that one with the 1/1 waste ratio.

I wouldn't say this is the 'best', especially for large growers, but I have a counter top r.o. system that I recommend. http://amzn.to/oOHIrZ

It gets nasty city water (about 275ppm) down to about 12ppm. Makes 50 gallons a day. I get about 3 gallons an hour. Like I said, it's not for large scale growers, but for hobbyists with 150-400 watts, it's perfect. It's portable so I can take it with me and I didn't have to modify my apartment unit's plumbing.

Tastes great, plants love it! Only thing is it wasn't "tubed" right so I had to call customer service and we got it working.

happy growing :ying:
