Root Aphids....Suggestion for getting rid.

I've got an infestation of root aphids and I need some suggestions on how to get rid of them.

I thought I had cal/mag problems but could do anything to remedy this. I found a dead adult last night in my flower cab. The two trainwrecks I have showed symtoms at 25 days of 12/12 and the JTR I have is showing the same symptoms at 25 days of 12/12.

I've recently switched to a 250W HPS from CFL and thought the change in light source might of had something to do with leaf problems.

Any suggestion on what to use please.

Cheers

Cheers Sam...Yeah I've read a lot of that thread, that's what put me onto the problem.

Could do with some links for UK retailers of the stuff required.

Hi RD

I battled R A all summer, i presume your in the u.k and may or may not no that imid is on the E U list of toxins, this makes it all most impossible to obtain in the U.K

the 3 products i found it in, here in the uk. were all made by bayer but sold under the name bayer provado.

one was the bayer lawn and grub killer, and the second was Bayer Provado Ultimate Bug Killer Concentrate² the 3rd Provado Vine Weevil Killer².

Now none of these are for the treatment of R A but all contain imid in some shape or form.

Also bare in mind that all 3 are systemic and must not be used later than 7 wks before harvest.

I used an equal combination of all 3.

i doubled the recommended dose for all 3. per ltr

but instead mixed it into 2 gallon of water i ph it to 5.5 and fed equal amounts to all my plants over 10 days.

havent seen any since i went through this course of action, and now feed to my plants in vege so alls good.

BoB.

P.S

Also it your feeling flush and dont want to fuck about you can order.

Bayer advanced 12mth tree and shrub insect control.

of Amazon it will cost $20 for the product but $55 postage to the uk.

That stuff is the bomb as they say on the streets, but it does exactly what it says on the tin.

I found these bastards in my pots last night. Hit them up with 5ml/gal bayer tree and shrub. Lots of little dead bodies today. You can get it at a hardwood store.

I found this on another site after reading your other thread...

Hope it helps.

Botanigard is an insecticide that is composed of a living fungus, beauveria bassiana. This fungus seeks out aphids and infects them, causing death. Then it releases spores waiting for more victims. It also works to control whiteflies and thrips. You can order it at many garden stores or through garden websites on the internet.

Neem oil and citrus oil have also been used to kill aphids, but they sometimes affect the roots. Test them on a sample plant before using either of them in the garden.

The aphids should be treated every other day with a minimum of six treatments. Rotate the insecticides. Botanigard can be combined with pyrethrum. The neem and citrus oils can be mixed with each other as well as pyrethrum. The idea is to totally eliminate the pests.

If the plants are growing in a hydroponic system, rather than mixing the treatment in the reservoir, make a special batch of water. Turn off the hydroponic system and water the plants using a watering can. Let the insecticide water stay in the root area for at least an hour before turning the hydroponic unit back on.

Once the aphids are gone, it is difficult for them to reinfect. They were probably introduced to your garden by a new element such as a clone or infected planting mix.

I have just added two inches of dried sand to the top of my pots, (soil) and sprayed with Bayer Ultimate Bug Killer 2, ill tell you how it goes.

Like a lot of people i thought they were just fungus gnats, annoying but not a massive issue, it was only while searching for my strange deficiency symptoms that i found out how serious root aphids are, hence the drastic measures.

Does anyone know if they can breed in the soil as opposed to on the wing?

Are the flying versions just looking to found new colonys?

So you add the Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Killer to your nutes? How late into flower can you do this? I literally just noticed these in my pots about 5 mins ago. Both rooms. When I uncover a little bit of soil, I can see maybe one crawling around. Any advice would help. I am going on day 44 of flower, on a couple strains I was hoping to take 10 weeks.

Bro I been in a war w them for months now. Had a major infestation. Tried everything chemically and nothing totally rid my garden of them. I finally bought 1500 ladybugs for $20 US. I have had em for 3-4 days and I barely see any aphids. I will keep some ladybugs in my garden. Definitely mother nature's best defense. Good luck bro

nobody uses diatomaceous earth? If you place a layer on the top of your soil the critters will kill themselves when they try to crawl out. It cuts up there soft body's. I like this no chemicals in my plants .

That sounds like maybe a good prevention method. But what about if you want to kill them while youre flowering. I know its not a bad infestation, but I just hate the thought of bugs in my garden.

Do you think if I were to use a layer of diatomaceous earth on top of my coco soil, it would prevent a root aphid infestation in the future? I hand water.

why not they have to enter or exit at some point. when they reach the flight stage they crawl out and kill themselves. Yes if you have a hard time watering(I have seen this) just make a hole and water cover the hole with more and your done. Give it a try wont hurt can only help. Some people use those water globes while there treating for them.

sounds ok, but I need a better preventative method then that. I dont have the time to use a water globe to feed my plants.

You dont need to use one lol. Just poke your finger in the coco and water cover the hole back up.

You do realize that a water globe would cut down the time not add time.
.

The best preventive measure is to not except cuts that are rooted. You need to get cuts that are not rooted and do it yourself.

Get the cut re cut and rinse very well. Apply rooting hormone and insert into what ever you use

If a water globe could hold a half gallon of water, I might consider it. But id have to buy 16 globes, just not practical. Its a good idea for a small application. But I am talking about a prevention method like something I can add to my nutes every month.
