Mixing MH & HPS???

Is mixing a 1000 watt HPS with a 1000 watt MH recommended?
What is the benefit and could it be potential disaster?
I just acquired 4 1000 MH, 400 watt HPS and 2 1000 watt HPS because my buddy moved into a house and all of the lights were still hanging in the attic and still on timers... So he told me if I could get them than I could have them.
At the moment I have a 150 watt HPS and a 1000 watt HPS in the grow-room/closet.

Thanks in advance......

I have used Duel spec bulbs in the past there was definitly an increase in tric coverage. I dont know about 1k of each though. Maybe a 600 watt hps and a 400 watt halide. Only reason why dont use the same bulb rt now is becuase they only come 1k and i'm rocking 600's

I'll prob just stay with my 1150 watts of HPS for now and then when I start my photoperiod(12/12 strains) grow I'll use 2000 watts of MH to veg then back to 1150 watts of HPS for flower.

Since I have been running both MH and HPS in flower I have had a noticeable increase in the quality. I have now set my rooms up to all have dual spectrum. My 1000hps dominates in wattage over my 400mh but I would not hesitate to run a 1000mh and a 1000hps together.

Cheers,

Running a 150 watt HPS and 100 watt CMH as soon as I put the finishing touches on my bloom box.
I have the hardware so figured why not.

the main differences between MH and HPS lights is lumen output and spectrum. MH lights have a bluer spectrum and put out a less lumens then HPS. HPS lights have more reder spectrum and put out more lumens then MH.

with that being said. you can use and combine them in any way in veg or flowering and it will not hurt your plants. people tend to use HPS exclusively for flowering because it is most cost efficient in production of yield, and MH exclusively for veg because it has a better spectrum. flowering under MH lights will give you a smaller yield but better quality buds with more trichomes.

IMHO you should not veg under 2k MH then switch to 1.150K HPS for flowering. that would be a major decrease in lumens. you would yield more flowering under the 2k MH and get better quality buds. a more ideal set up would be all of the 6 or 7 of the 1k lights in a flowering room and use the 400 and the 150 in a seperate veg room (just throwing it out there).

hope that helps

I have been using mixed lighting for years. buying 1kw bulbs and ballasts is the most econimical course, however, the light is uneven which yeilds uneven growth. You will have to frequently rotate your plants or have a light mover.
I grow in a scrog so plant movement is not an option. Height restrictions precludes using the comercially avaliable light movers. I use 175 watt mh and 200 watt hps for a 3' x 8' scrog. I have 6 rows of lights in my 8' hood. The lights are spaced 18" apart in each row and the rows are also spaced 18". I alternate the lights mh-hps in one row front to back, hps-mh in the next and so on.. that way the light spectrum is evenly mixed.
I find the mixed spectrum to be superior (IMO) to either MH or HPS singularly.
The mh holds down the typical hps stretch and the hps presence gives tight heavy nugs.
hope this helps....

Thanks all of you for your input...
I believe I will go ahead and set my 1000 watt HPS and MH in the closet after I finish my duct work.

Hi angel..
I built the hood myself. My scrog is 3' x 8' and the hood was built to match it it is a modified parabolic made of 16 ga mirror polished aluminum. The bulbs are vertical mounted. I find this setup to give me much more even light coverage and penetration than using larger bulbs.
Another bonus to this setup is that it works well for vegging and flowering. Total wattage is 1950 which works out to a bit over 80 watts per sq. ft. Normal production for the strain I grow most (sativa hybrid) is 2200 to 2300 grams.

Peace and love to all....

I have used mixed blue-yellow for years, and like it, especially with sativas. I just went to all yellow, cause I am growing indicas this year, and they yield better with yellow. You will be fine.
